    Job Summary: The person in this role will reduce or eliminate speech and hearing impediments that interfere with a students ability to derive full benefit from the districts educational programs.

    Essential Functions: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include, but are not limited to, the following tasks, duties, knowledge, skills and other characteristics.     ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES generally include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
    • Serves as a resource to school staff members in the development of a program for speech involvement.
    • Provides therapeutic program to meet individual needs of speech and hearing handicapped children.
    • Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments.
    • Provides thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, hearing, and language impairments.
    • Provides screening to identify speech handicapped children at regular intervals & specific levels.
    • Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community as appropriate.
    • Provides appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual students needs and correct existing speech or language handicaps.
    • Collaborates with classroom teachers and other staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the students daily activities.
    • Provides information, support, and counseling to parents and families when appropriate.
    • Provides in-service education and serves as a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning speech improvement.
    • Keeps thorough records on students receiving therapy or other school-provided speech services.
    • Maintains a list of referred, screened, and eligible students.
    • Assumes primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment & supplies.
    • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
      KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
    • Knowledge of applicable Federal, state, county and city statutes, rules, policies and procedures.
    • Knowledge of applicable Peoria Unified School District and departmental policies and procedures.
    • College training and clinical experience in the area of speech and hearing.
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers, vendors, students, parents, the general public and others having business with the school district.
    • Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Certification as a Speech Therapist/Pathologist from the Arizona Department of Education OR any equivalent combination of experience and education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

      OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
    • Must be able to pass a fingerprint and background clearance check.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain an Arizona drivers license.
    • May be required to lift and carry heavy, bulky supplies and materials weighing up to 20 pounds.
    • May be required to work outside normal working hours.
    • May be required to travel to perform work functions.
