    STARTING HOURLY RATE: $18.41 - $19.25 (PLACEMENT DEPENDS ON SIMILAR EXPERIENCE HELD AND EDUCATION)

    SUMMARY:

    The Bus Driver Trainee position participates in the Driver Training Program for the purpose/s of training for transporting of students over scheduled routes and/or to/from special excursions; learning to ensure vehicle is in safe operating condition; and learning to ensure safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses /vehicles.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    1. Acquires skills to assess incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation.
    2. Develops communications skills to communicate with parents, students, teachers, administrators, other drivers, dispatchers, etc. for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information.
    3. Assists the bus driver and acquire skills to drive district buses /vehicles for the purpose of transporting regular education and/or students who require specialized transportation over scheduled routes and to/from school and/or field trips in a safe and timely manner.
    4. Acquires skills to maintain assigned vehicles; both interior and exterior (e.g., performing vandalism checks, cleaning floors/windows/seats, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicle.
    5. Assists in maintaining order on the bus and learn the process of monitoring students, parents, and/or teachers during transit for the purpose of maintaining order and ensuring the safety of passengers.
    6. Assists the students who require specialized transportation during transport, perform first aid as necessary for the purpose of meeting the immediate health care needs of passengers and provide help with seizure situations.
    7. Acquires skills to perform pre-trip inspections (e.g., fluid levels, tire pressure, lights, exterior conditions, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle and meeting state requirements.
    8. Performs non-violent crisis intervention techniques and restraints for the purpose of de-escalating crisis situations to provide the best care, welfare, safety and security for all.
    9. Acquires skills to prepare documentation (e.g., daily mileage and condition reports, incident/accident reports, inspections, disciplinary and positive behavior reports, mileage, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
    10. Acquire Arizona Commercial Drivers Class B license with passenger and school bus endorsements and obtain AZ DPS school bus certification within 90 work days of initial start date.
    11. Supports the relationship between the Phoenix Union High School District and the public by demonstrating courteous and professional behavior when interacting with students, parents, visitors, and school staff; maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and school information; follows Governing Board Policies; performs all other related duties as required or assigned.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:

    High School diploma or GED equivalent.

    License and Certification Requirements:

    Ability to obtain CDL and DPS certification within 90 days of employment.
    Ability to obtain a valid IV Fingerprint Clearance Card within 45 work days of initial start date.
    Obtain certification in First Aid/CPR.

    • Ability to assist students in embarking and disembarking the school bus.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

    Work is performed on a school bus along designated routes. Work requires climbing up and down bus stairs, bending, kneeling, crouching or stooping, pulling, and may require lifting up to 100 pounds. May be exposed to hot and cold temperatures, hazardous
    chemicals, and infectious diseases.
