Position Description

This position is in the Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department. OPEN UNTIL FILLED.

Salary Grade: 47

Installs, repairs, fabricates, constructs, maintains and may operate heavy industrial equipment at a wastewater treatment plant, pumping station, deep well site or booster station. This is distinguished from the Operator and Maintenance Technician classification by the overall complexity, close tolerance levels and equipment/machinery size that are maintained and or repaired.

Duties/Responsibilities

(Work assignments may vary depending on the department's needs and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.)

Performs operational and preventive maintenance of complex heavy-duty industrial equipment and machinery utilizing hydraulics and pneumatics of systems involving pneumatic tanks, deep wells, air compressors, pneumatic actuators, wet wells, pumps and booster stations;
Fabricates, constructs, installs, repairs and aligns heavy-duty industrial equipment and machinery such as deep well pumps, water pump and piping systems, horizontal and vertical drive centrifugal pumps, spherical, thrust, radial and line-shaft bearings on pumps and motors utilizing gas and electric welding;
Performs critical repairs to complex systems, equipment and related features to maintain system integrity and functions in accordance with standards, rules and regulations, particularly those systems or equipment operated under permits or licenses granted by other governmental agencies;
Interprets and applies required codes or standards to work situations;
Interprets complex blueprints, schematics and diagrams to facilitate work;
Prepares working sketches, drawings and estimates of resources required for assigned projects;
Repairs or operates specialized equipment such as submersible pumps, speed increasers and decreasers, blowers, conveyors, gear boxes, mixing equipment and industrial stationary engines and precision measuring equipment such as micrometers and dial indicators;
Coordinates equipment and system modifications or maintenance with operations and maintenance staff, supported facility managers or end-users, to assure minimal disruption of services and seamless customer service;
Inspects, services and maintains common and specialized tools, equipment and vehicles used in performance of duties;
Utilizes and ensures fellow staff utilizes standard occupational safety practices and equipment;
Maintains comprehensive records of work performed, modifications to equipment or systems and related operations logs;
Prepares periodic and special reports for management on equipment, systems and/or facilities supported or maintained;
Conducts on-the-job training of operators and maintenance staff;
May inspect and lead the work of equipment operators and maintenance mechanics.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Knowledge of:

  • operating principles, practices and techniques of assigned complex or specialized equipment, systems or facilities support systems;
  • operation and maintenance of tools, equipment and materials encountered in area of assignment;
  • millwright, welder, plumber/fitter and rigger trades;
  • hazards, safety procedures or equipment required in the area of specialization or assigned work areas;
  • codes, standards, rules and regulations applicable to the area of work assignment;
  • techniques of effective communication.
Skill in:
  • following written and oral instructions;
  • preparing working sketches, drawings and estimates of resources required for assigned projects;

Minimum Qualifications

(1) Six years of mechanical maintenance experience in the fabrication, installation or repair of large heavy-duty industrial mechanical equipment, deep well turbine pumps, submersible or centrifugal booster pumps.
(Relevant education from an accredited college or trade school may be substituted.)
OR:
(2) Three years of experience with Pima County as a Trades Maintenance Specialist performing mechanical maintenance work involving the fabrication, installation and repair of mechanical equipment and pumps.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

  1. Four (4) years of combined experience in any of the following industrial mechanical equipment:
    • Performing repairs and routine maintenance of industrial pumping systems
    • Deep well turbine pumps
    • Positive displacement pumps
    • Submersible pumps
    • Centrifugal booster pumps
    • Gear boxes
    • Plumbing
    • Pipe fitting
    • Compressor/blower maintenance
  2. Experience in construction, installation, trouble-shooting, alignment of heavy duty industrial equipment and machinery.
  3. Experience in welding and fabrication.
  4. Experience maintaining work history activity logs and tracking the maintenance/preventative maintenance of equipment.
  5. Experience interpreting blueprints, schematics and diagrams.

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum/desired qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidates from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicants suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services review and approval of the candidates driving record.

Physical/Sensory Requirements: Post-offer physical is required. Employees may be exposed to various weather conditions, high noise levels, caustic, corrosive or potentially harmful chemicals, solvents and airborne dusts. All positions require the ability to lift up to fifty pounds or more for brief periods, bend or stoop and lift arms above shoulders to perform work, enter and work in confined spaces, climb ladders to elevated heights and walk on uneven/slippery surfaces, which may require the proper wearing of individual safety and protective equipment.
