Pima County's Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD) is proud to be an award-winning industry leader in the management and sustainability of the water reclamation cycle and other renewable resources. As a Wastewater Technical Trainer, you will be responsible for developing, delivering, and evaluating the training to wastewater Operations and Maintenance Technicians and other RWRD Treatment personnel.

The selected candidate will deliver direct instruction on wastewater theory and facility operations and maintenance in both classroom and field settings as part of career development and state regulatory required certifications. This position is also responsible for creating and developing multimodality training content, instructional materials, and presentations for both in-person synchronous and asynchronous web-based learning. This position requires excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills combined with a strong aptitude for public speaking.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Identifies and prioritizes training needs, programs or strategies based on regulatory and departmental requirements;
  • Collaborates with internal teams and subject matter experts to ensure alignment with department goals and objectives;
  • Designs, develops, delivers and updates technical training curricula, materials, and evaluations, using fundamental principles of the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment and conveyance systems, processes, equipment and machinery;
  • Provides technical and practical training for the purposes of obtaining licensing certifications, credentials, or endorsements that are required of Department employees;
  • Uses various digital tools and platforms to research and develop training materials for a variety of settings, and uses relevant computer software programs and applications for training documentation, file and database management, and report preparation;
  • Possesses sound knowledge and understanding of the subject matter taught; participates in professional development to enhance skills, knowledge and to stay updated on new technologies and best practices;
  • Evaluates external materials and texts for use, may coordinate the provision of training by other external sources;
  • Uses principles and practices of employee supervision, training and evaluation.
Minimum Qualifications

(1) Three years of experience as teacher/instructor in one or more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline or as instructor/trainer in related industrial job training.

(Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)

OR:

(2) Three years of experience in the operation or maintenance of an advanced, complex wastewater/water facility or related industry/facility as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment AND at least one year of experience performing lead, supervisory and/or training duties (supervisory/training experience may be concurrent).


(Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)

OR:

(3) Two years of experience with Pima County in an Operations & Maintenance Technician II, Utility Maintenance Worker III, Industrial Wastewater Inspector, Wastewater Maintenance Specialist II, Conveyance Systems Monitoring II or closely-related position as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. ADEQ Grade 2 Wastewater Treatment Certification or experience teaching environmental science, ecology, biology, medical field, hydrology, geology, or agriculture.
  2. Intermediate experience with Microsoft Office Suite including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Teams, or other educational or training development software.
  3. Experience developing curricula and associated training materials.
  4. ADEQ Grade 2 wastewater collections, water treatment, water distribution or experience instructing Industry-related job training (CTE/JTED/Trade School).
  5. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills combined with a strong aptitude for public speaking.
  6. Experience presenting developed (pre-developed/existing) training materials.
Selection Procedure:

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum/desired qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum/desired qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Supplemental Information

Licenses and Certificates: Conveyance-specific and Treatment Operations-specific positions may require maintaining at least either a valid Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Grade 3 Wastewater Treatment System Operator certification or ADEQ Grade 3 Wastewater Collection System Operator certification. Some positions require a valid Arizona Class D driver license or commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements as identified by the appointing authority at the time of application or appointment. Failure to maintain the required licensure shall be grounds for termination. Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicants suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services review and approval of the candidates driving record. Some positions require a valid Arizona Class D driver license at time of application or prior to completion of an initial or promotional probation period. Failure to obtain/maintain the required certification/licensures shall be grounds for termination.

Physical/Sensory Requirements: All positions require sufficient body flexibility, mobility, stamina, and balance to allow for standing, walking, sitting, grasping and manipulation of work objects, frequent bending, stooping, reaching, climbing stairs/ladders; regular or occasional crawling, kneeling, squatting, lifting/ carrying objects up to 50 pounds, pushing and pulling objects up to 75 pounds, donning/doffing fall protection to work in confined spaces; interpreting written manuals, gauges, etc., including distinguishing various colors; comprehending voice communications in-person, over a radio/phone, and hearing operating equipment; operation of machinery and powered industrial equipment. All positions require outdoor work, including during inclement and hot weather, and exposure to waterborne pathogens/agents, hazardous materials and gases, water hazards and wet/slippery surfaces, odors, fumes, humidity, dirt, dust, traffic hazards, venomous pests, uneven surfaces, and electric arc flash potential.
