Position Description

There are multiple, intermittent (with rotating days and weekend shifts) positions in the Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Department. OPEN UNTIL FILLED.

Salary Grade: 19


Responsible for safeguarding the lives of persons at a swimming pool, by observation and intervention in case of accidents and/or violations of safety and sanitation practices, rules and regulations. This classification is distinguished from the Lifeguard-WSI classification which teaches swimming and may supervise the pool in the absence of the pool manager.

Duties/Responsibilities

(Work assignments may vary depending on the department's needs and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.)

Oversees activities at a swimming pool;
Rescues swimmers who are in danger of drowning;
Administers first aid including Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR);
Assists in enforcing sanitation rules and regulations at pools;
Maintains pool sanitation;
Tests pool water for chemical balance;
Acts as timer and judge;
Assists in teaching swimming.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Knowledge of:

  • lifesaving principles and practices;
  • first aid.

Skill in:
  • performing lifesaving functions including rescue and CPR;
  • enforcing regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially;
  • preventing dangerous situations from arising, in recognizing emergencies and taking necessary action;
  • maintaining effective working relationships with others.
Minimum Qualifications

Completion of American Red Cross lifeguarding certification course.

Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the "Education" and "Work Experience" sections of the application. Do not substitute a resume for your application or write "see resume" on your application.

Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum/desired qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum/desired qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Supplemental Information

Licenses and Certificates: Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate required on the date of appointment. First Aid, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and CPR for the Professional Rescuer must be included as part of the lifeguard certification. Some positions require a Pool Operator license at the time of application or within six months of appointment. Failure to obtain/maintain the required licensure/certification/registration shall be grounds for termination.

Special Notice Items: Applicants must be at least 15 years of age, or older at time of application and must be 16 years of age on or before date of appointment. As a condition of employment or continued employment, positions within this classification may be required to submit to a criminal history background check with state and federal agencies pursuant to A.R.S. 41-1750 and Public Law 92-544.

Physical/Sensory Requirements: Physical and sensory abilities will be determined by position.
