Position Summary

Performs basic accounting functions such as ledger/fund analysis, cost analysis, fund reconciliation, posting, and fiscal control of inventory. Prepares financial reports from standard operating statistics and/or financial data. Investigates and resolves problems related to funds, budgets, expenditures, and/or procurement practices. Provides assistance in the development, implementation and maintenance of internal fiscal systems and procedures, applying basic concepts, methods, and techniques. May serve as unit/area transaction initiator or requisitioner. Duties include workshop presentations and may include weekend budget hearings.

The Student Government Accounting Office (SGAO) is a part of the Student Activities Center and provides fiscal and accounting services for student organizations on our campus. Overall, the office works with approximately 300 student organizations, 2 student governments, over $1.2 million in total budgets, 40 student employees and graduate assistants, scholarship and grants processing, and more. The office has an Accountant 3, 2 Accountant 1s, and 2-3 workstudy students. SGAO is within the Student Activities Center in the Student Union Building and the Accountant 1 has a private cubicle within that space.

This Accountant 1 position makes purchases for about 140 student organizations indices, does daily cash deposits for the movie theater and craft studio, manages student organization inventory, and more. As a part of student organization/government purchases, this position manages sports club travel arrangements, reconciles indices, makes p-card purchases, does petty cash and regular reimbursements, initiates P.O.s, and JVs, and more. This accounting position is in a very social setting, so people skills and customer service are very important. Students on this campus rely on this Accountant I position to navigate the financial processes at UNM, usually with tight timelines.

Conditions of Employment
  • If this position is assigned to the Athletics Department, either administratively or functionally, compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations is required.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 9 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; no previous experience required.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations, and university financial policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of UNM computerized information systems used in financial and/or accounting applications.
- Knowledge of standard and/or fund accounting principles, methods, and applications.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with students.
- Account balancing and reconciling skills.
- Ability to set up and maintain financial accounts and ledgers.
- Ability to function in a team environment.
- Ability to function in a lively, busy, noisy, active office environment.
- PCard Holder
- Cash management experience
