Position Summary

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking a highly motivated financial professional with excellent customer service skills to join our dynamic team as an Accountant II. This is a high energy position that requires attention to detail, assertiveness, patience, excellent oral and written communications, and superb organizational skills. This position also requires responsiveness to multiple internal and external stakeholders including students under tight deadlines, resourcefulness, follow-through and flexibility. The qualified candidate will be skilled in budget development, financial tracking and reporting; be able to investigate, interpret and analyze financial data; be adept at recordkeeping and information-gathering; and be able to establish, maintain, and build positive relationships. The desired candidate is customer service-focused; efficient; and able to prioritize and manage multiple, complex tasks simultaneously. The monitoring, review and reconciliation of accounts accurately and completely is a major aspect of this position.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversees daily processing and accounting for revenue and expenditures for all aspects of the Department; ensures accuracy, completeness, and compliance with university, local, state, and federal requirements, and standard accounting and audit procedures.
  • Interprets and analyzes financial operations and transactions, forecasts trends, and develops special complex reports and analyses for faculty and the Department Chairperson.
  • Performs full contract/grant pre-award process for Department to include budget preparation, proposal submission, and working closely with the PI and UNM sponsored projects.
  • Prepares, reviews, and processes budget, revenue, expense, payroll, and related entries including JVs, PHAREDS, and ePAFs.
  • Performs, and/or oversees lower level staff with transaction initiation, requisition, or journaling duties, such as processing purchasing requisitions, direct pay requests, journal vouchers, PCard purchases, and Chrome River reimbursements.
  • Reviews purchasing, travel, and personnel requests for availability of funding, mathematical accuracy, coding and distribution of account numbers, and adherence to funding regulations and university policy; will/may also be responsible for originating or preparing these documents; processes complex invoices for payments.
  • Manages the annual Salary Planner and mid-year review processes.
  • Compiles, analyzes and reviews the budgets and expenditures for each award at least monthly, with reports to each PI.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 12 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 1 to 5 years-experience reconciling a high volume of restricted and unrestricted indices accurately.
  • Experience using MS Excel, Access, or other accounting software for reconciliations, forecasting and reporting.
  • Experience with contract/grant pre-award budgeting and award submission process.
  • Ability to research, collect, analyze and compile data for regular monthly management reports.
  • Familiarity with UNM policies and procedures and UNM accounting standards.
  • Experience with simple and complex journal entries.
  • Banner Finance experience.
  • Experience with corporate credit card management and use.
  • Ability to communicate financial information concisely to the lay person, verbally and in writing.
