Job Description

Financial Services seeks an Accountant for the Commitment Accounting department to perform a wide variety of accounting and compliance responsibilities related to payroll, tax, benefits and retirement plans while utilizing the University's HR and financial management systems.

A successful candidate, not presently employed within Financial Services, will be paid a signing bonus of $750 and a $1,250 bonus after completing six months of employment with the department.

Essential Duties

  • Performs a broad scope of complex accounting duties, including preparing journal entries and supplier invoices, reconciling balance sheet accounts, analyzing HR and accounting data, research accounting related questions for university customers (department, faculty or students) and remitting deduction payments.
  • Assists with the calculations for employee payroll overpayments, preparing the main overpayment accounting log and tracks all repayment deductions and prepares the overpayment correspondence for department and/or employees.
  • Maintains knowledge of relevant laws and regulations effecting payroll and fiscal operations.
  • Participates in fiscal year end close and the preparation of work papers, schedules and accrual journal entries in accordance with GAAP/GASB standards.
  • Assists with performing analysis to ensure the propriety of IRS W-2 boxes for employees are correct.
  • Participates in functional user testing of PeopleSoft system updates/upgrades.
  • Assists with preparing and filing payroll tax reports and remittances on behalf of the University for federal, state and local tax jurisdictions. Research payroll tax regulations and communicate with other agencies to resolve tax issues.
  • Assists with setup and maintenance of out-of-state employees; includes collection of required tax forms, research and identify proper tax jurisdictions, employee setups in PeopleSoft, monitoring tax deductions and make correcting adjustments.
  • Assists with University’s benefit, garnishment and retirement deductions.
  • Performs any other ad hoc projects or duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field AND one (1) year of professional accounting experience; OR, Five (5) years professional accounting experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Bachelor's degree in Accountancy.
  • Experience with a major HR system (i.e. PeopleSoft).
  • Experience with preparing detailed financial reports, financial analysis and financial statement review.
  • Experience in payroll and tax analysis.
  • Experience with using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience in effectively handling multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline driven environment.
  • Experience in working independently and as part of a team while taking on new tasks with high level of difficulty.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Evidence of effective verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in providing customer service, with the ability to interpret employees' questions and answer them accordingly.
