The Library & Cultural Services department offers an empowering environment of lifelong learning and cultural commitment. Their essential mission is to stimulate learning and literacy, inspire creativity, and lastly, integrate arts culture, and history in to the lives of Aurorans.

More specifically, Cultural services serves over 1 million people of all ages, and abilities levels each year with fee based and free classes, programs, performances, and outreach programs, and activities. Bicentennial is a year-round Pottery studio with working gas, electric and top hat kilns and two pottery studios. Bicentennial provides classes with experienced pottery instructors and open studio hours for students. The center also provides supplies, tools, custom glazes and firings for enrolled students for additional fees.

The ideal applicant for this position will have prior pottery and ceramic experience and/or knowledge. They will also be team orientated and effective problem solvers.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversees day to day operations of Bicentennial Art Center that provides Arts and Pottery programs to citizens.
  • Performs administrative duties such as purchasing, budget recommendations, records of expenditures and revenues, and complex record keeping and reporting systems.
  • Responsible for maintaining front desk coverage during all open hours.
  • Responsible for scheduling, hiring, training, and evaluating assigned temporary staff.
  • Responsible for supervising assigned temporary staff on a day to day basis.
  • Responsible for cash handling, balancing and daily deposits and credit card custodial duties.
  • Coordinates work schedules and monitors activities including all phone and in person registration processing, collecting, and accounting for fees.
  • Provides verbal and written communication to students, instructors, the general public and city staff.
  • Develops and coordinates facility usage schedules for all facility activities.
  • Monitors, reports and oversees maintenance and repairs for facility and equipment in a timely manner.
  • Composes a variety of correspondence and reports.
  • Responds to citizen inquires and complaints.
  • Applies policies and procedures.
  • Loads and unloads electric kilns and unloads high fire kiln when needed.
  • Oversees pottery classes and open studio hours when Pottery Specialist is not available.
  • Oversees art camps and classes at Bicentennial Art Center when Visual Art Specialist is not available.
  • Answers questions and registers students for Pottery, Art and Music programs.
  • Assists all center staff with between class and daily to annual cleaning of center surfaces and floors.
  • Will be the primary on-call person for emergencies and operation matters. May be required to work nights and weekends on an occasional basis.
  • Responsible for opening studio during inclement weather.
  • Assists Pottery, Visual Arts/Music Specialist and Cultural Arts Supervisor as needed with programming, customer service, communication, marketing, quality control, etc.
  • Maintains and updates BAC Facebook page, Cultural Services Website for Pottery, Visual Arts and Music programs.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two or Four- year degree in ceramics is highly preferred.
Experience:
  • 2 years of administrative support experience.
  • 3 years of experience with ceramics and pottery including, but not limited to, technique, skill, etc. strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of facility management, scheduling, program coordination and cash management.
Abilities
  • Ability to establish and maintain clear lines of communication and effective working relationships with employees and citizens, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Handle sensitive or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Compile and prepare reports, coordinate and oversee the work of others.
  • Work on-call and respond to facility as required, and use a variety of office equipment.
  • Ability to learn and utilize the Perfect Mind registration Software.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands:

  • Physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing to set up for facility programs.
  • Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate computer and office equipment.
  • Vision for reading, recording, and interpreting information.
  • Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.
  • Physically clean clay dust from surfaces and floors on a daily basis.

Work Environment:
  • Generally works in a clean, comfortable environment. Surfaces and floors often covered in clay dust. Glazes and chemicals (some of which may be classified as hazardous) may be used or produced in the production of ceramic or pottery pieces.
