Job Description
The Kino Border Initiative is a bi-national, inclusive Catholic organization, inspired by the spirituality of the Jesuits and Missionaries of the Eucharist; locally rooted in Ambos Nogales on the Mexico - US border and with a regional approach throughout Central America and North America.
Our mission is to promote humane, just and workable migration through humanitarian assistance, education and policy advocacy.
Our advocacy strategy is based on attentive listening to the migrant population and, from there, develop an agenda, raising their testimonies to highlight the impact of immigration laws and policies. We join together and collaborate with other organizations and movements with whom we share common goals and ideals. At the same time, we mobilize our constituents towards action for humane and just migration.
Purpose of Position
The Advocacy Coordinator supports the Director of Education and Advocacy and the Associate Director of Education and Advocacy in implementing the advocacy strategy, leveraging the resources and networks of KBI, a Catholic organization located at the US-Mexico border, to promote humane and just migration policy.
Duties and Responsibilities
Migrant Facing Advocacy (45%)
- Support advocacy staff with documenting abuses, both in the US and Mexico, training others to document abuses, and other relevant accountability and monitoring projects as needed.
- Together with the Director of Education and Advocacy, coordinate KBI's strategy for collecting and documenting the testimony from people who come to our center for the first time, or who interact with us during monitoring, including the training of colleagues and volunteers.
- Maintain statistics, databases and processes conducive to effective advocacy work.
- Cultivate strategic partnerships with other immigrant advocacy organizations to identify opportunities for KBIs compelling stories and data to inform and support the broader advocacy movement.
Decision-Maker Facing Advocacy (40%)
- In partnership with other staff, implement the strategic plan for advocacy efforts in the US and Mexico that is attentive to the realities experienced by the migrants that KBI accompanies.
- Support building and maintaining connections with Congressional offices to inform them and persuade them to champion policies that promote the dignity of migrants.
Education (15%)
- Maintain a relevant and up-to-date presentation about the immigration context in the U.S. and support the education team with presentations for groups visiting the KBI.
- In collaboration with other education and advocacy staff, plan, implement and update advocacy trainings for volunteers and other leaders at KBI partner institutions.

Knowledge, Abilities and Personal Characteristics
- At least two years of experience in ministry, education or non-profit social services.
- A deep personal commitment to accompaniment of migrants and work towards humane and just policy.
- Ability to reflect deeply, question dominant narratives, and be consistently attentive to the voices and experiences of those most affected by government migration policies.
- Experience working with vulnerable populations preferred; familiarity with issues related to unaccompanied minors, victims of gender-based violence, victims of intimate partner violence and victims of human trafficking.
- Knowledge of and experience with advocacy strategy for humane and just migration policies.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a binational team environment with good interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
- Appreciation for Jesuit traditions and spirituality preferred.
- Familiarity with the US/Mexico border region, contemporary migration issues and trends, the global governance of migration, and US/Mexico immigration policy preferred.
- A bachelors degree or higher in education, social work, religious studies, Latin American studies, peace and justice studies, law, or equivalent disciplines is preferred.
- Must possess a US passport or an immigration status that allows the individual to move easily across the U.S. - Mexico border, or the possibility of obtaining the corresponding visa.
Language skills
Fluent written and verbal communication in English and Spanish is required.

Compensation
The expected salary range is $45,000 - $52,000 per year, commensurate with experience. Benefits include employer-paid health insurance, employer matching contributions to a 403(b)-retirement plan, 2 weeks paid vacation, 13 days of annual sick leave (which can also be used toward family leave), many Federal and Catholic holidays, and six weeks paid family leave.
