Animal Care and Experience Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY:

Oversee and coordinate work activities of Animal Care Specialists while providing support for our Animal Experience team and volunteers. Walk through all kennel areas multiple times daily to ensure departmental and organizational standards of care are met. Address and coach staff as needed for proper execution of job duties. Perform Animal Care and Experience duties, including daily cleaning and enrichment. Cover staffing or volunteer shortages.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Determine staffing needs. Formulate work schedules, assign job duties and responsibilities to Animal Care Specialist.
  2. Assist Animal Care and Experience leadership with department goals, budgets and advancement. Make recommendations and participate in departmental improvements, staff training and team building.
  3. Ensure issues are reported, escalated and/or resolved in a timely manner.
  4. Monitor Animal Care and Experience teams, including Animal Experience volunteers, to ensure compliance of departmental operations and expectations.
  5. Monitor, oversee, counsel, and evaluate job performance of Animal Care Specialist.
  6. Work with and assist Animal Experience volunteers as necessary.
  7. Ensure Animal Care Specialist understand and carry out their responsibilities accurately, safely and efficiently, providing a clean, safe environment for the public, other employees and the animals.
  8. Ensure that supplies are maintained and areas meet organization and cleanliness standards.
  9. Ensure each area has the proper equipment and the equipment is in proper working order.
  10. Report and investigate all on-the-job injuries sustained by Animal Care and Experience staff and volunteers. Complete paperwork and follow proper protocol for injuries.
  11. Assist in supply inventory and ordering of care and enrichment items on a weekly basis.
  12. Ensure all chemicals are used/handled properly and safely by Animal Care Specialist, other employees and volunteers.
  13. Assist in the interview, hiring and onboarding process for new staff members.
  14. Ensure requests for assistance from any personnel are responded to in a prompt and courteous manner.
  15. Consult regularly with the Animal Care and Experience Manager/Supervisor regarding work schedules, department procedure and any necessary corrective actions and/or employee and volunteer relation issues.
  16. Interact with and assist other department supervisors and personnel as needed.
  17. Perform normal animal care and experience duties with other employees and volunteers wherever needed.
  18. Other duties as assigned by the Animal Care and Experience Manager or Supervisors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma OR
  2. Ability to coordinate work activities.
  3. Minimum of 1-year team lead or other leadership role.
  4. Basic knowledge of animals and animal handling experience preferred.
  5. Must possess strong organizational, public relations, telephone and verbal communication skills.
  6. Is required to handle multiple tasks at once and have the ability to oversee activities of the Animal Care Specialist.

Language Skills: Able to speak, read and write English; Spanish language helpful.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic mathematical skills.

Computer Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Explorer; able to learn other software programs as necessary. Proficiency with or able to learn/use Chameleon software (for use with animals in a shelter environment).

Other Skills, Abilities and Qualifications: Regular attendance is required and is an essential function of this job. Access to reliable transportation.

Physical Demands: The Animal Care and Experience Coordinator is in constant contact with the Clinic, Field Operations, Adoption and Admissions, Veterinarian and Animal Care Specialists as well as anyone who handles stray or protective custody animals. Due to the nature of the work of the Society, this position has a very high stress level. There is also a high risk of injury due to the number of animals handled daily. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. There is continuous repetitive motion of the hands, arms and legs. Good vision, hearing and the ability to speak clearly are required. The employee must be able to lift and carry animals or supplies up to 70 pounds. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
