Job Description

Art Therapy is an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship.

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Clinical Director, provides individual, group and family art therapy and intervention for enrolled parents and/or children. May also include sand tray and play therapy modalities if the therapist is certified in these areas. Assesses and communicates client psycho-social treatment considerations to the client treatment team. Demonstrates congruity with agency’s philosophical foundation as it relates to counseling and intervention services. Provides clinical support to staff addressing client problems. Seeks consultation with the agency’s clinical team.

Education and Experience

Master’s Degree in Art Therapy

Minimum of one year experience in related field

LMHC working toward LPAT licensure

LPAT preferred

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

  • LPAT, ATR-BC
  • Clear Criminal Records Clearance – required
  • Current First Aid/CPR Certification – required
  • Defensive Driver Certificate – required if operating a PB&J vehicle
  • Current Automobile Liability Insurance – required if transporting clients in personal vehicle
  • Valid NM Driver’s license– required if transporting clients in personal vehicle

Abilities

Ability to utilize a wide variety of art and related materials in supporting clients’ therapeutic needs. Ability to read, analyze and interpret relevant professional journals, reports, legal documents, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and policy and procedure manuals. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from clients, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and reports that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity in verbal and written formats. Ability to speak directly with others and engage in problem-resolution. 

Ability to identify and solve practical problems and address a variety of concrete variables in situations that may be complex. Ability to interpret a variety of written or verbal instructions and to understand diagrams and schedules. Ability to observe behavior and appropriately intervene in situations posing a threat to children and adults. Ability to work independently and participate effectively within interdisciplinary teams. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and consider several abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions (recess time, home visitation/travel). The employee frequently works off-site. Employee also frequently works in an office and classroom environment with a noise level that ranges from moderate to loud.

The employee is required to drive an automobile in order to provide needed crisis intervention, assist clients with needed service acquisition, and perform required responsibilities in the client’s home during non-traditional hours when public or agency transportation is not available.
