What Success Looks Like In This Job

This position will perform professional legal work for the County Attorney, including representation of the County in hearings and trials, and advising the Board of County Commissioners, elected officials, and directors. Assigned legal responsibilities vary by position and may include direct representation of elected offices or other areas of focus, including particular subject matters or areas of expertise (employment law, elections, land use, tax law, contracts, etc.). Career attorneys have developed a level of expertise in their field of practice that allows them to work more independently than Entry attorneys. This particular recruitment is seeking an attorney to defend the County in civil litigation, including responding to EEOC charges and other administrative charges, prisoner litigation, personal injury cases, and civil rights cases.

The Department has elected to consider a range of experience for this vacancy. A candidates' qualifications will determine the level at which they are hired.

Assist County Attorney-Senior $106,500.72-$149,101.01

Examples of Duties for Success

Important and essential duties vary based on particular assignment.

  • Provide representation for the County at hearings, trials, and administration hearings.
  • Manage caseload of civil litigation.
  • Respond to EEOC charges and other administrative complaints.
  • Provide legal support to particular departments, elected offices, boards, or commissions.
  • Litigate zoning and land use matters.
  • Advise clients regarding statutory duties and obligations.
  • Research legal questions and prepare opinions.
  • Draft ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents.
  • Monitor legal developments, including proposed legislation and court decisions.
  • Provide guidance and training to clients on preventive measures.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.

  • Ability to perform statutory interpretation and legal research analysis and writing.
  • Desire and ability to try cases and competently and professionally present arguments/evidence in court.
  • Working knowledge of judicial procedures and rules of evidence.
  • Ability to interpret and apply legal principles.
  • Ability to use initiative and independent judgment, and work effectively without close supervision.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in current computer software programs used for daily job functions, including knowledge of Lexis-Nexis and/or Westlaw legal software.
  • Ability to interpret and apply legal principles to complex legal problems.

Assist County Attorney-Career

  • Experience: At least five (5) years experience as a licensed attorney in a field related to assignment.
  • Education and Training: Must possess a law degree from an accredited law school.
  • License or Certificate:
  • Must be licensed to practice law with the State of Colorado.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • Preferred Experience: Civil litigation experience and experience working with government entities.
  • Background Check: Must pass a criminal background check.
Assist County Attorney-Senior

  • Experience: Minimum of ten (10) years of experience as a licensed attorney in field related to assignment.
  • Education and Training: Must possess a law degree from an accredited law school.
  • License or Certificate:
    • Must be licensed to practice law with the State of Colorado.
    • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • Background Check: Must pass a criminal background check.
