Position Summary The Department of Linguisticsat the University of New Mexico invites applications for a tenure-trackAssistant Professor of Linguistics with a specialization in Phonology to beginin August 2025. This is a full-time position. Applicants must have a PhD in Linguisticsor a related field by date of appointment. For best consideration, allapplication materials must be received by November 15, 2024.

We seek candidates whoseresearch orientation is compatible with our commitment to functional,usage-based approaches to linguistic explanation using empirical, data-drivenmethods. Competitive applicants will have additional expertise in areas thatcomplement the strengths of the Department.

A successful candidate will be capable of mentoring students andteaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including phonologicalanalysis and usage-based phonology. They will also be able to supervise mastersand doctoral students, and contribute to core, required undergraduate andgraduate courses.

Qualifications

Minimum

  • Ph.D. in Linguistics or closely related field by start date of appointment
  • Evidence of primary specialization in phonology

Preferred

  • Demonstrated ability or potential to develop a research program in usage-based phonology, laboratory phonology, and/or phonological typology
  • Secondary research specialization in language documentation, variationist sociolinguistics, and/or language acquisition
  • Excellence in scholarship in areas of specialization, including the ability or potential for obtaining extramural funding
  • Research and/or teaching experience in quantitative corpus linguistics, computational methods, and/or historical linguistics
  • Excellence in teaching
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities
