Assistant Professor of UNMCCC in IM Epidemiology - Biostatistician - req# 14382

The University of New Mexico NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) and the Division of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Preventive Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine at the UNM School of Medicine (UNM SOM) invite applications from Ph.D. Biostatisticians to join an outstanding team of faculty in biostatistics who are engaged in statistical methodology relevant to cancer and in biostatistical applications integrated with basic, translational, clinical, and population science research. We seek candidates with strong potential to contribute to clinical research and cancer clinical trials design, but also population and basic science studies, and, who will collaborate with cancer-focused physicians and scientists through the UNMCCC Biostatistical Shared Resource. Potential areas of research interest include, but are notlimited to, the study and application of modern clinical trials approaches,particularly adaptive and Bayesian methods, statistical methods for cancergenomics, statistical modeling of large data sets, as well as statistical andquantitative approaches focusing on algorithm development, prediction modeling,survival analysis, competing risks models, and causal inference. Successful candidates will have an academic faculty appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine at UNM SOM, membership in the UNMCCC, and will join the UNMCCC Biostatistics Shared Resource, which is highly engaged in the Centers Multidisciplinary Clinical Working Groups focused on the development and prioritization of cancer clinical trials and correlative studies and in the cancer clinical trials infrastructure and regulatory committees (Clinical Protocol & Data Management, Data Safety & Monitoring, Protocol Review and Monitoring System, and Early Phase Clinical Research). Salary will be commensurate with experience and education. Significant resources, including excellent salaries and start-up packages are available.

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. The 146 oncology physicians, 102+ cancer research scientists, and staff are particularly focused on discovering the causes and the cures for cancers that disproportionately affect the people of the American Southwest - primarily Hispanic, American Indian, and Non-Hispanic White - with strikingly different patterns of cancer incidence, mortality and disparity. The Center treated 13,578 patients in 105,748 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of 1,361 patients participated in cancer clinical trials, including 544 (40%) who participated in clinical trials testing new cancer treatments that include assessments of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. National centers and programs at UNMCCC is highly engaged in national centers and programs, including Project ECHO, the Molecular Discovery and High Throughput Target Screening Center, and one of the nations Chemical Biology Consortia in The NCI NExT Program. The UNMCCC is also a member of the ORIEN National Network of NCI Cancer Centers engaged in precision oncology, data sharing, and collaborative research (http://oriencancer.org). Focused on discovering the causes and the cures for cancers disproportionately affecting the multiethnic peoples of the American Southwest, the UNMCCC has a robust early phase clinical trials program and an experimental therapeutics unit and has developed new diagnostics and early phase interventional trials for leukemia, and cancers of the breast, lung, ovary, prostate, liver, pancreas, brain, and melanoma.. Rich collaborations with UNMCCC partners (Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories; Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute) with unparalleled computing and technology infrastructure enrich our research endeavors. The UNMCCC is the center of a collaborative statewide cancer clinical trials and health delivery research network and is funded by a NCI NCORP Grant (Minority/Underserved). Minimum Qualifications:

• PhD in biostatistics/statistics or a closely related field; and
• Must be qualified to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Expertise in modern clinical trials methodologies and applications;
• Ability to develop collaborations with investigators from multiple disciplines in areas of oncology research emphasis;
• High impact methodological orientation;
• Strong potential for a funded independent research program; and
• Ability to provide leadership and direction to staff scientists in the UNMCCC Biostatistics Shared Resource.
