Position Overview
The Global Futures Laboratory seeks an Assistant Research Scientist to join the Earth League Secretariat. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing the mission of the Earth League by coordinating international efforts, fostering collaboration among global scientific experts, and ensuring impactful communication of scientific insights to key stakeholders and the public. This role requires proactive leadership, strategic coordination, and the ability to understand and translate complex scientific findings to international audiences.
This is a unique opportunity for a skilled scientist and communicator with a strong background in sustainability, climate science, or related fields to shape global discourse and influence policy on some of the most urgent issues facing our planet.
This is a full-time, fiscal year, non-tenure track, benefits eligible position, with an anticipated start date of December 2024. Subsequent appointments may be offered on an annual basis, under the same terms and conditions, contingent on satisfactory performance, availability of resources and the needs of the university.

The Earth League, led by the Global Futures Laboratory at ASU, is an international alliance of leading institutions and individuals dedicated to tackling the most critical global challenges, including climate change, natural resource depletion, land degradation, water scarcity, and food security. The alliance provides evidence-based insights and innovative strategies for decision-making to drive sustainable solutions. Earth League members serve as a collective voice in the global dialogue on these planetary challenges, shaping long-term strategies through collaboration and forward-thinking action
Key Responsibilities:
- Supports administration and communication of the Earth League Secretariat.
- Serve as a leader within the Earth League Secretariat, driving initiatives aligned with the Earth League’s mission.
- Facilitate collaboration and communication among Earth League members, including leading international institutions and Fellows.
- Coordinate and manage Earth League meetings, ensuring that outcomes are communicated effectively to stakeholders and broader audiences.
- Lead the development and dissemination of Earth League publications, including preparing manuscripts and reports tailored to scientific, policy, and general audiences.
- Oversee the maintenance and enhancement of the Earth League website, ensuring its role as a dynamic platform for global engagement, with technical assistance.
- Develop and implement strategies for Earth League fundraising in coordination with the Global Futures Laboratory’s leadership.
- Act as a key liaison between the Earth League and its sponsors, partners, and institutional affiliates, fostering strong relationships and advancing collaborative projects.
- Support research and communication efforts by coordinating cross-functional teams, managing complex projects, and contributing to Earth League’s research outputs.
Required Qualifications:
- PhD and three years of research experience (ideally postdoctoral) in sustainability or a related field.
Desired Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or Ph.D. in sustainability, environmental science, climate science, development studies, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in scientific writing, with the ability to provide writing samples that reflect excellence in communication.
- Proven experience in coordinating medium or large, international and/or interdisciplinary networks, consortia, or collaborative initiatives.
- Expertise in research administration and project management, with the ability to manage multiple teams and align activities with strategic goals.
- Strong problem-solving skills, decision-making capabilities, and the ability to set priorities in a fast-paced, global context.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with experience translating research into accessible formats for international audiences.
- Knowledge of fundraising strategies and working with sponsors and stakeholders is helpful.
