Major/Essential Functions
  • Provides oversight and management of the Hunt School of Dental Medicines oral health research program and resources
  • Expands educational, biomedical, translational, clinical and population health research emphasis areas in alignment with the strategic goals of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso and the Hunt School of Dental Medicine
  • Develops strategic initiatives to grow the quality, visibility, and impact of scholarly activity by faculty and students within Hunt School of Dental Medicine
  • Identifies and promotes collaborative research opportunities for the Hunt School of Dental Medicine, including those with academic health centers, foundations, industry, practitioner groups, and the community
  • Works collaboratively with the Office of the Vice President for Research at TTUHSC El Paso to promote scholarly collaborations and research development across schools, disciplines, and the community, and to ensure compliance with institutional, state and federal requirements for research
  • Promotes research integrity and responsibility and ensures that the schools personnel adhere to standards of ethical conduct of research and reporting
  • Mentors faculty and students in grantsmanship skills, to include the development and submission of high quality, competitive grant applications, post-funding management of grants, presentations and scholarly activities
  • Participates in course administration and instruction for the dental school curriculum, to include developing, delivering, and assessing an integrated curriculum through innovative formats and a team-based approach
  • Works closely with the TTUHSC El Paso Office of the Vice President of Research, Deans and Associate Deans, departmental research components, course and curriculum committees, fellow faculty, and key administrators to accomplish the goals and objectives of the TTUHSC El Paso and Hunt School of Dental Medicine
  • Engages in scholarship and represents the school at regional, state, and national professional meetings
  • Serves on school and institutional committees and engages in academically-related public service
  • May participate in clinical service and teaching with an emphasis in the integration of scholarship
  • This position is a 1.0 FTE with 80% of time dedicated to research leadership and administration and 20% of time dedicated to teaching and/or clinical service
  • Reports to the Dean of the Hunt School of Dental Medicine, and manages additional projects as requested by the Dean
  • Adheres to institutional policies and procedures
  • Demonstrates professionalism in accordance with the Hunt School of Dental Medicine Declaration of Faculty Professional Responsibility

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in a biomedical or health sciences discipline and/or relevant research fellowship experience
  • Experience in the use of an integrated format to develop and implement clinically-integrated skills in dental research methodology that targets students and developing faculty
  • Experience in teaching and assessing clinically-integrated research skills for dental students, while utilizing innovative teaching and mentoring methods (e.g. case-based learning, team-based learning, problem-based learning, eLearning, and cohort sessions)
  • Experience with data management and software systems, including those pertaining to research and grant administration, clinical health records and curriculum management
  • Participation in national organizations and/or committees devoted to dental research and education
  • Regional or national recognition in oral health-related research

Required Qualifications
  • D.M.D./D.D.S. or equivalent dental degree
  • A minimum of five years of experience in research with a track record of funding in one or more the following oral health areas: public health, epidemiology, health services, educational, bioinformatics, behavioral, biomedical or clinical/translational research
  • A minimum of five years of leadership experience in a CODA-accredited program
  • A minimum of five-years of experience in teaching in higher education
  • A strong record of externally-funded oral health-related research and peer-reviewed publications
  • Experience in the development of grant proposals and the management of extramural funding
  • Knowledge of and experience with research compliance, indirect costs, effort reporting, responsible conduct of research, federal and state grant regulations, and human subjects/animals research
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a culturally competent professional with experience in supporting the needs of a diverse faculty, staff, and student population
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or higher
  • Eligible for Texas dental licensure
