Job Description

Being a part of Sun Devil Fitness and Wellness at ASU as an Associate Director means uniquely engaging in our mission of enhancing the ASU student community which embraces physical, mental, spiritual, and social well-being of self and others as a hallmark of the Sun Devil Experience. We do this through skill building, community building, and healthfulness.


The Associate Director assists with the planning, organizing and directing of the Sports Programs (Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs) and supervision of respective professional and student staff. The position focuses on student development, strategic planning, and creating new engagement opportunities for student success. This position works primarily on the Tempe campus, managing the Tempe summer kids camp program and serves as a member of the university-wide Sun Devil Fitness and Wellness management team in support of all campus locations.

Salary Range

$65,000 - $68,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

  • Oversees all elements of the ASU Intramural Sports and Sport Club programs that serve students across all four campus locations, including delivery of education from campus partners, team management, safety protocols, recruitment, and oversight of the staff.
  • Provides administrative, supervisory, and management support for three direct full time staff members at Tempe and provides strategic guidance to one full time staff at each of the other three campuses.
  • Plan, administer, and manage the functional operating budgets. Oversees budgetary responsibilities for current and future planning for Intramural Sports Programming and Sport Club management and provides recommendations regarding existing financial expenditures and future budgeting projections.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Tempe summer Kids Camp program.
  • Conduct research on emerging trends, analyze and interpret demographics and assessments, compile comprehensive reports, and contribute to strategic planning efforts.
  • Cultivate an inclusive and diverse environment for student participants and staff.
  • Ability to quickly change priorities, which may encompass the need to resolve conflicts.
  • Lead staff to work together in a coordinated manner consistent with university, division, and departmental goals and objectives.
  • Effectively engage undergraduate and graduate students, multidisciplinary teams, community groups and partners in planning, implementation, and evaluation of activities that cultivate a culture of community and connection.
  • Ensures that emergency and security procedures and systems for all programs are comprehensive, communicated, drilled, and current.
  • Participates in ongoing discussions to assist the Educational Outreach and Student Services (EOSS) programming team in the development and implementation of an effective campus-wide approach to programming and activities, with the goal of heightening campus engagement.
  • Serves as an active member of the departmental management team.
  • Supports SDFC One University mission, vision and functional project management areas.
  • Advances university and EOSS goals and values.
  • Participates in evaluation of all staff that is directly supervising
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND seven (7) years of related administrative experience, which includes four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR, Eleven (11) years of related administrative experience, which includes four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master’s Degree preferred in Recreation, Physical Education or related field.
  • Experience in programming/coordinating intramural sports activities and/or the management of sport clubs. (1 year)
  • Experience working in summer kids camps or working with youth programs.
  • Experience working in a college or university recreation environment.
  • Experience managing and developing professional and student employees.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in problem-solving and sound decision-making abilities.
  • Evidence of organizational skills and proficiency in project management.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Experience maintaining effective working relationships, presenting to audiences, public speaking, analyzing problems, proposing effective solutions, and effectively delegating responsibilities to staff.
  • Experience meeting priority deadlines while providing accurate and excellent services.
