Job Description

The Center for Personalized Diagnostics at the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University is seeking a highly motivated individual who will be responsible for the research, design, development, testing, maintenance, and technical support of innovative bioinformatics software for use in scientific research.  The Assoc. Scientific Research Software Engineer will design and develop high quality innovative tools and utilities required for Bioinformatics analysis to accelerate scientific research and gain insights into genes involved in human diseases and investigate their biological functions.  As a member of the Informatics Team, the successful candidate will work closely with research scientists, statisticians, and lab staff to create, deliver, and support high quality innovative research software applications and databases using bioinformatics, data management, software programming and web development skills.


Salary Range

$51,100 - $70,900 per year; DOE

The Biodesign Center for Personalized Diagnostics is a research center within the Biodesign Institute that focuses on personalized medicine. Promising advances in the area of personalized medicine have shown us that life-threatening diseases are as distinct in character as the individuals they afflict. The Virginia G. Piper Center for Personalized Diagnostics has been established with an eye toward overcoming the health care challenges posed by disease variance. Our Center is developing new diagnostic tools to pinpoint the molecular manifestations of disease based on individual patient profiles. The strategy promises not only to improve therapeutic care, but also to greatly reduce treatment costs by allowing for early disease detection.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field 3-years prior experience developing software in a research environment; OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Desired Qualifications Evidence of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or related field of study and three years' work experience developing high quality software in a research environment. Evidence of having a software development and database background with technologies such as MySQL, Python, PHP, Angular JS, Java, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, XML, Apache, Tomcat and Linux is required. Evidence of a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or related field of study and two or more years of full-time software development experience Experience in data management, graphical user interface, visualization, analytics and database skills Experience with software design, development and technical support of bioinformatics applications Experience in systems integration Demonstrated knowledge and experience with microarray systems, process technology and robotics to support high throughput functional biology and proteomics a Evidence of effective communications, teamwork and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties Selected candidate will become a member of the research informatics team focusing on: Designing, implementing, testing, and delivering innovative scientific research applications, Developing high quality web-based software and database applications, Creating, testing, and supporting high throughput bioinformatics tools, Analyzing and writing software functionality requirements, designs specifications, manuals, and user guides, Interacting, training, and working with users on how to use software and solve problems, Distributing developed software to the scientific community as necessary, and Reviewing, modifying, and rewriting existing software to optimize it or adapt it to fit new requirements. These tools are being developed and used for functional proteomic research applications including clinical lab testing, high-throughput cloning, automated clone evaluation, machine learning, biomarker discovery, microarray processing and biomedical advanced research and development projects. Working Environment Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse (75%); Frequently required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work (20%); Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds (5%). Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts; Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
