TITLE: AVID Tutor (Temporary Position)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

AVID is a college preparatory program in which middle school students become the facilitators of their
own academic success. AVID provides study groups directed by tutors; a structure of note taking and
organization aimed at refining skills necessary for success in middle school, high school, and college; and
an arena for expanding the college-level entry skills of students underrepresented in higher education.

Position is responsible for facilitating tutorial groups for middle school students and evaluating students
work. Position is also responsible for assisting the AVID Teacher in the administration of the AVID
program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Education and/or experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or GED
2. Enrolled in a degreed program at a college or university (preferred) or former AVID Student or
AVID Tutor.
3. State of Arizona Identity Verified (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card.
4. Must possess the ability to perform as a role model for middle school students
5. Must possess excellent organizational and motivational skills
6. Must be willing to attend all training sessions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act,

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Tutor students individually, or in small groups, in all subject areas utilizing class notes and materials
collected by AVID students.
- Determine the concepts that need to be addressed in the tutorial groups.
- Assist students with developing writing skills and respond to students writing assignments.
- Evaluate student binders to include notes, assignment sheets and tutorial worksheets.
- Communicate with the AVID teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.
- Assist the AVID teacher with arrangements for guest speakers, field trips and parent workshops.
- Attend all program training sessions.
- Act as a resource and supplement to the AVID teacher.
- Encourage students to learn and achieve academic success.
- Model nondiscriminatory practice in all activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of early childhood or adolescent learning methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of District policies and procedures affecting assigned work.
- Knowledge of District behavior modification program.
- Knowledge of early literacy skills and strategies.
- Knowledge of testing procedures and State standards.
- Skill assisting teachers with student learning. - Skill monitoring and assisting students.
- Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Skill communicating orally and in writing.
- Skill utilizing classroom supplies and equipment.
- Skill maintaining confidential files and records.
- Skill administering tests.
- Ability to work with culturally diverse students.
