  • DEFINITION: Under close supervision, assists to teachers in the supervision and instruction of students in need of behavior support and socialization training. Observing and documenting student progress; implementing plans for instruction; and assisting students by providing for special health care needs.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledges, skills and other characteristics.     TASKS:
    Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team; traveling between multiple school sites and working with constant interruptions.
    Assists in completing functional analysis assessments, development of behavioral plans and other data driven services for the purpose of creating successful intervention plans.
    Assists in designing and delivering behavior intervention plans and in training other staff related to the implementation of those plans for the purpose of increasing the knowledge of staff and meeting the needs of students.
    Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
    Assists special education students with classroom and daily living skills for the purpose of creating a positive plan of action to address specific student issues and helping them to process behaviors.
    Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g. CPR training, Blood Borne Pathogen, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
    Collaborates with Program Specialist and other staff for the purpose of designing, implementing, and when necessary, making minor on-site modifications to behavior interventions and behavior support plans.
    Confers with teachers and staff as appropriate for the purpose of assisting in evaluating special education student progress, implementing IEP objectives and identifying resources.
    Implements behavioral plans designed by IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other conditions for the purpose of assisting in meeting special education students needs and providing a consistent environment.
    Implements instructional lesson plans for the student for the purpose of assisting the student in the development of identified skills, reducing undesired behaviors, increasing on-task time and developing social interaction.
    Maintains instructional materials and/or student files/records (e.g. adapting instructional materials, checking papers, attendance, audio visual equipment, set up projects, emergency cards, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items and/or providing reliable information.
    Models appropriate student behavior and play for the purpose of showing students positive social skills. Use age appropriate student activities; safety practices and procedures; conflict resolution; and stages of child development/ behavior.
    Monitors student and personnel response in instructional settings during which student exhibits undesired behaviors for the purpose of tracking behaviors, developing alternate interventions and decreasing undesired behaviors.
    Assist in the transition of students to less restrictive educational settings and may be required to perform assistance to address skill deficits and to promote the development and use of alternative behaviors to students with extreme behavior issues.
    This position may require response during instructional settings in which students may exhibit intense undesired behaviors and require additional support during instructional periods.
    Monitors student(s) (e.g. lunch, bus stops, playground, classroom, field trips, assemblies, etc.) for the purpose of enforcing school rules regarding behavior and participation, and/or providing a safe and positive learning environment.
    Performs record keeping (daily data on instruction and/or behavior) and clerical functions (e.g. correcting papers, copying, instructional materials, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the teacher in providing necessary records/materials.
    Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injured student, fights, seizures, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
    Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans.
    Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is moderate.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
    Knowledge of District policies and procedures
    Knowledge of developmental, physical and mental delays and emotional disorders
    Knowledge of special education or special needs accommodations
    Knowledge of standards for special education.
    Skill in utilizing sensory equipment.
    Skill in monitoring and assisting students with behavior interventions.
    Skill in effective verbal and written communication
    Skill in following oral and written instructions
    Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments. Works requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, bending, and lift a minimum of 50 pounds. May be exposed to infectious diseases.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    High School Diploma or equivalent.
    Fingerprint clearance is required
    One (1) year of childcare or classroom experience and one (1) year of working with students with special needs, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
    Additional certifications may also be required as specified by the District.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Associates Degree
    Behavior intervention training

    Depending on the needs of the District, some incumbents in this class must be able to demonstrate fluency in both Spanish and English as a condition of employment.

    Salary Grade: 12 Hourly Pay: $13.38 Hours per Day: 8 Days in Contract: 211
    Start Date: 2020/2021 School Year
