Primary Purpose:

To support campuses in serving students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment that meets their needs by participating in individual student planning and problem-solving and providing training and support for staff and parents regarding the needs of students with social, emotional, behavioral, and/or intellectual challenges

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Must have one of the following certifications both are preferred:

Board Certified Behavior Analyst
Valid Texas teacher certification in special education or related area

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of current research on best practices and methodology in child and adolescent development with an emphasis on social, emotional, and behavioral development of children and adolescents with disabilities.

Knowledge of current research on best practices and methodology in working with students with a variety of disabilities including, but not limited to, autism spectrum disorders, emotional disorders, neurological disorders, and/or intellectual disabilities.

Knowledge of and skill in engaging diverse groups in a problem solving process around student needs in both the educational and community setting.

Knowledge of and skill in developing and implementing preventive interventions, instructional opportunities, and behavior management plans for students with social, emotional, behavioral, and/or intellectual disabilities.

Knowledge of state and federal laws and policies regarding the education of students with disabilities

Knowledge of community resources and supports for individuals with and families of individuals with disabilities

Experience:

Minimum of 3 years of experience working with children/adolescents with diverse social, emotional, behavioral and intellectual needs in a school setting

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Provide expertise to regular and special education personnel and parents regarding students with social, emotional, behavior, or intellectual challenges disabilities providing disability specific information as needed
2. Assist school teams in determining specific learning, social, emotional, and/or behavioral, needs of students and in developing, monitoring, and evaluating appropriate instructional and intervention programs.
3. Assume a leadership role in the development of educational programming for specific students as designated by Special Education Administration.
4. Conduct Functional Behavioral Assessments and assist in the development of Behavior
Intervention Plan as designated by ARD committee decisions.
5. Conduct In-Home Training Assessments and develop goals and objectives for in-home training as designated by ARD committee decisions.
6. Assist teachers in planning and conducting instructional activities in the areas of social skills and understanding; self-regulation; planning & organization; and independence.
7. Initiate and support programs and services that facilitate inclusion of students with disabilities, including assisting administrators and teachers in identifying appropriate classroom placements for students with disabilities
8. Participate in, and lead when appropriate, problem-solving meetings including, but not limited to, parent-teacher meetings, Student Support Teams, campus staffings, and ARD committee meetings.
9. Work collaboratively with campus and district administrators to maintain a continuous flow of information regarding the needs of students in special education.
10. Maintain SAMA certification and assist campuses in ensuring that de-escalation and crisis procedures are implemented appropriately.
11. Provide on-going training as needed at the campus level to teachers, paraprofessionals, and other staff working with students with social, emotional, behavioral, and/or intellectual disabilities, including SAMA training.
12. Plan and conduct district wide professional development programs as directed by Special
Education Administration regarding working with students with disabilities.
13. Keep abreast of new developments in the field by reading current journals and publications, attending workshops and trainings, and participating in local, state, and national professional organizations.
14. Complete all required paperwork accurately and in a timely manner.
15. Comply with district policies as well as state and federal guidelines.
16. Maintain student confidentiality.
17. Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Special Education.

Maintain emotional control under stress.

Regular district wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned. Limited out of district travel to deliver presentations, attend conferences, and/or visit alternative sites if requested by administration

May be required to assist other staff in carrying out physical containments of students who present a danger to self or others.

Frequent standing, stooping, bending, reaching, pulling, pushing, heavy lifting, and moderate carrying. May be required to lift and transfer student to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities. Exposure to biological hazards.
