Primary Purpose:

Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route. Operate school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated location in a timely manner.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Valid Texas commercial drivers license (Class B) with appropriate endorsements
School bus driver certification
CPR & AED trained

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Must be 18 years of age
Ability to pass alcohol and drug tests
Ability to pass the state required physical examination for school bus driver
Ability to complete required school bus driver safety training
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Ability to communicate effectively
Ability to enforce student discipline procedures
Ability to manage student behavior
Acceptable driving record
Ability to operate school bus

Experience:

None

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Vehicle Operation:

Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
Drive school bus to and from extracurricular activities.
Check school bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs. Complete required report.

Records/Reports:

Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures.
Complete required reports.
Keep records on school bus mileage, gas and diesel consumption, name and number of passengers transported.
Maintain monthly attendances for TEA report.
Maintain current route description; submit change requests for approval prior to implementation.
Prepare and maintain seating assignment chart.
Sweep bus and empty trash can on a daily basis.
Keep school bus fueled. Have bus fueled when fuel level drops to 1/2 tank.

Student Management:

Supervise students while they board and leave the school bus and cross the street.
Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on school bus.
Exercise student management through correct use of communication and discipline and report discipline problems to school officials using a written referral form. Never use profanity.
Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.

Safety:

Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
Inspect school bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, steering, etc. to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as two-way radio, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and reflector triangles.
Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
Report any hazardous conditions along the route.
Report any accident involving the school bus to the Director of transportation immediately. Submit all required reports to the Director within 24 hours following an accident.
Must be physically able to climb in and out of the school bus emergency door to evacuate the bus in an emergency.

Other:

Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office according to established guidelines.
Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
Includes safety and in-service meetings.
Maintain a presentable appearance that includes being properly dressed according to departmental guidelines to include neat grooming, and good hygiene.
Conduct work in a manner consistent with Texas Hazard Communication Act.
Conduct work in a manner consistent with guidelines for Pathogen handling.
Work irregular hours as needed.
Maintain Confidentiality.
Other duties as assigned.

Equipment Used:

School bus or light van, wheelchair lift and ramp, locks, seatbelts, harnesses, car seats, special adaptive equipment, safety equipment such as roof hatches, fire extinguisher, reflective triangles and jumper cables.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control. Work with frequent interruptions. Continual sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions, pushing, pulling, lifting, dragging, moderate climbing bus stairwell.
Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures (hot or cold), humidity, vehicle fumes and noise.
