Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Center on Alcohol, Substance Use, And Addictions (CASAA) is seeking a Scientific Research Manager to support an NIH-funded clinical trial examining treatments for persons with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), conducted in collaboration with the Mind Research Network (MRN). CASAA is a Category III Research Center dedicated to applied health and substance use related research.

At CASAA our first priority is to reduce suffering caused by substance use and other addictive behaviors. We do this by generating high quality prevention and treatment research. We settle for nothing less than the highest standards of scientific integrity in our research and applied programs. Attention to human diversity strengthens our science and makes it relevant to our larger society. We do our best work by collaborating with colleagues and working across disciplines, which helps us answer more important questions about substance abuse than we otherwise could. At CASAA we are committed to sharing our knowledge with fellow scientists, practitioners and individuals who are directly impacted by substance use. It matters to us that our work makes an impact both here in our state and in our larger community.

CASAA investigators, affiliated with the Departments of Psychology, Sociology, Economics, and Health, Exercise, and Sport Sciences are leaders nationally in 12-step research; research on Motivational Interviewing and the Community Reinforcement Approach; family-involved treatment models; training and dissemination research; development of instruments; studies of mechanisms of change; clinical research in special populations, particularly adolescents, women, Hispanics, American Indians, and criminal justice populations; research on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders; and research on methods to reduce harm from risky drinking.

CASAA is the home for the UNM Campus Office of Substance Abuse Prevention (COSAP). CASAA has long-standing relationships with a number of community-based treatment programs that are available as sites for clinical trials. The relationships between CASAA and these treatment facilities are on-going and reciprocal, and CASAA is widely regarded as a key resource for the development and testing of empirically supported treatments for alcohol and other substance use disorders. In addition, CASAA has uniquely strong relationship with several pueblos.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Scientific Research Manager will manage and lead the integrated support activities for a scientific research laboratory. The individual will coordinate collaborative research projects; develop research protocols; guide, lead and/or oversee the work of research staff; establish and manage research technology and facilities;, and oversee the day-to-day administration of the study.

Must be sensitive to research participant privacy and data collection and have a clear understanding of HIPAA compliance and IRB requirements.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Experience in the protection of human subjects in research
  • Experience in the conduct of clinical trials
  • Experience with behavioral health populations
  • Experience in managing grant-funded research
  • Proficiency in use of spreadsheets (e.g., Excel, Google)
  • Experience with RedCap software
