POSITION PURPOSE:

To educate and train individuals for Alaska State Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Licensure. The individual will be trained under close supervision of a Registered Nurse throughout the training program. The training will prepare the individual to be a member of the Long Term Care (LTC) facility health team functioning as a CNA I for a two-year commitment. The CNA Trainee will be trained to provide direct assistance/personal care, including exercises and meals, to residents under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The CNA Trainee strives to assist residents to maintain and/or regain their optimal state of health and self-care, and to provide dignity and comfort.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The CNA Trainee provides direct resident care within the boundaries of local, state and federal regulations, under the direction of the Long Term Care Director of Nursing, Long Term Care Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON), LTC Clinical Care Coordinator, and the LTC Registered Nurse (RN). The CNA Trainee reports to the Long Term Care Director of Nursing (DON).

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Must be at least eighteen (18) years old.
  2. Maintains BLS certification.
  3. Speaking, listening and basic writing skills required to effectively communicate with others and to document care provided. Ability to complete computer documentation is required.
  4. Basic algebra skills required for measuring input, output, weight calculations and vital signs.
  5. Must complete general hospital orientation.

ENVIRONMENT:

South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22-bed critical access and 28-bed skilled long term care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula. The position requires walking and standing for prolonged periods, stooping, sitting, and the ability to lift large loads without injury to self or others. Persons in this position may be exposed to blood-borne pathogens and infectious diseases, falls, needle stick injuries, and muscle strains. Mechanical lifts are available for lifting residents as needed. Generally, physical demands are moderate and most work is performed inside.
