POSITION PURPOSE:

Certified surgical technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate safe and effective invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures. They ensure the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The Certified Surgical Technologist's (CST) responsibilities include handling of instrumentation, supplies, and equipment necessary for surgical procedure. They have an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgeon. They possess the necessary knowledge and the ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and are constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.

The CST, acting as a second assisting surgical technologist, assists the surgeon and/or First Assistant during the operative procedure by carrying out technical tasks. This role is distinct from that of the First Assistant and may in some circumstances, be performed at the same time as the scrub role.

Education/Job Criteria:

  1. High School Diploma or GED
  2. Graduate of a surgical technology program
  3. Certified Surgical Technologist
  4. A minimum of two years experience as a CST working in an operating room environment is preferred.
  5. Active BLS certification, or obtained within 30 days of hire
  6. Willingness to work flexible hours
  7. Ability/willingness to take call
  8. Willingness to assist in special projects as assigned
  9. Demonstrated full understanding of patient safety and privacy rights
  10. Demonstrated ability to maintain skills under extreme duress
  11. Team Player

ENVIRONMENT:

South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 40 bed acute care and long term care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula. The surgery unit consists two general operating rooms and one endoscopy suite. The position requires standing for extended periods of time without a break, in bright, artificially lighted rooms. Persons in this position are exposed to infectious diseases, including various blood-borne pathogens, potential muscle strains, possible needle stick injuries, and exposure to anesthetic gases. Generally, physical demands are moderate and all work is performed inside.
