Position Description
Employees in this classification provide patient care management to an assigned clinic in the areas of clerical and clinical duties. In clinical setting, the employee receives direct supervision from physician or nursing supervisor in either oral or written form. In office setting, the employee receives direct supervision from department administrator. May supervise other Medical Assistants, clerical staff and student positions. Work is performed uncle usual office and clinic conditions. May be stressful when working under emergency conditions.

Major/Essential Functions
  • On a daily basis serves as primary contact for patients by receiving them when they arrive to clinic. Greets all patients, takes a brief history for physician to review. Takes vital signs as needed, escorts patients to exam rooms and prepares them for examination by physician. Per direction from physician, provides wound care and dressing changes and instructions to patients
  • Reviews medical charts for completeness prior to patients arrival and obtains all pertinent reports/documents (lab, path reports, operative reports, discharge summaries, mammogram results and x-ray reports)
  • Prepares patients for history and physical. Reinforces consent form for surgical procedure and obtains signature
  • Review aII medical supply and medication inventory to remove and restock any items which may be cIose to expiration date. Clean and organize all examination rooms and work areas
  • Follows-up with patients to return to clinic once lab or mammogram/ultrasound results are obtained. Contact patients for surgical procedure scheduling or treatment
  • Obtains pre-authorization or pre-certification for coverage of studies, procedures, and infusion chemotherapy treatment for oncology patients as recommended by oncologist with appropriate ICD-10 and CPT codes needed; working in collaboration with UMC Infusion Center for chemotherapy
  • Assist the clinic front area to include answering incoming calls, provide registration of patient and schedule the patient for appointments using the ITUHSC appointment scheduling system and AVAYA telephone system
  • Provides education on breast self-examination to include but not limited to recommendations and other educational material available in clinic

Pay Statement
Compensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as, the institutional pay plan. For additional information, please reference the institutional pay plan on the Human Resources webpage.

Occasional Duties
  • Prepares patients for special procedures to include minor surgery, reinforces consent form for surgical procedures and obtains signature. Assists physician in minor surgical procedures (serving as scrub or circulator)
  • Prepares specimens for lab and takes to UMC Pathology Department
  • After minor surgical procedure, cleans and prepares instruments for sterilization
  • Reviews patient charts (cancer patients) and prepares a summary (case history) and submits to Medical director for presentation to Breast Conference. Assures patient follow-up based on directions/recommendations made at Conference. Notifies patient via telephone or mail
  • Assist in covering other clinics within the Surgery Dept. Attend community health fairs, annual fund-raising activity, provide training to medical assistants/students, represent Surgery Dept/Breast Clinic at any TTUHSC committees and/or meetings
  • Perform other work related duties as requested by Assistant Director, Head Nurse or Sr. CMA

Required Qualifications
  • A minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent
  • Graduation from an approved certified program for assistants in the area of required specialty
  • Certification by an approved accredited certifying agency in the specialty that particular work will be performed
