POSITION SUMMARY: The psychological assessment department within the Mental Health Center of Denver (MHCD) is seeking a full-time adult clinical neuropsychologist to join our growing team. The position will entail clinical work, training of psychology graduate students, and program development. Primary clinical duties will be neuropsychological evaluations of a full range of young adult to geriatric outpatient psychiatric clients, many with documented or suspected neurological disorders. Experience with more general psychiatric differential diagnosis is also required. Most referrals are made by MHCD psychiatrists and nurse practitioners. There is an opportunity to grow fee for service referrals from external agencies.

MHCD is a large, well-established, innovative, and vibrant community mental health center that provides outpatient mental health services to individuals recovering from serious and persistent mental illness. In addition to psychiatric illnesses, many of our clients have co-morbid substance abuse problems, significant general medical issues and diagnoses, traumatic brain injuries, and other etiologies of neurocognitive dysfunction. Assessment services are in high demand and the department is well-respected within our organization.

Psychological Assessment is highly valued by referring providers and there is an active waitlist for these services. There are four tracks within the psychological assessment department, staffed by licensed psychologists: clinical neuropsychology; adult psychodiagnostic and personality assessment; child and autism spectrum assessment; and forensic assessment. In addition to clinical neuropsychological referral questions, other assessment services offered by the department include evaluation of general intellectual functioning, learning disabilities, adaptive functioning, personality constructs, general emotional and interpersonal functioning, academic achievement, neurodevelopmental disorders and common childhood disorders, and forensic evaluations.

The neuropsychologist candidate will continue the expansion of neuropsychology-related services within the organization. Such opportunities may include building an internal cognitive rehabilitation program, developing problem-focused multidisciplinary clinics, and cultivating referrals streams from the broader community. Candidates will also display a desire and eagerness to work in a community mental health center.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Conduct clinical neuropsychological evaluations of diverse clients in an outpatient setting - carry own individual caseload. Meet professional deadlines.
  • Conduct neuropsychological addendum evaluations, if needed to supplement another referral within the department.
  • Supervision of pre-doctoral interns and externs (psychology doctoral students):
    • Supervise adult assessment intern (as part of APA-accredited internship with The University of Denvers consortium) and externs (primarily neuropsychological assessment) with the following responsibilities:
      • Individual supervision
      • Supervision related to test administration, test scoring, test interpretation, and integrative report writing
      • Report editing
      • Final approval and signing off on reports
      • Sign off on all progress notes
      • Interns/Externs carry own neuropsychological caseload, dependent on students abilities and personal approach to evaluation.
    • Opportunity to grow training department by expansion of externship opportunities and potential development of a post-doctoral position.
  • Active participant on multidisciplinary team; consult internally with other professionals, assist with treatment planning, attend clinical case review meetings, present at medical staff meetings on relevant neuropsychological topics etc.
  • Engage in peer consultation process with other staff psychologists; may include but is not limited to peer review of reports, case consultation and presentations, didactics etc.
  • Complete biannual case presentation at department Grand Rounds
  • Complete administrative duties and special projects, such as participation in presentations, research, program development, and other related projects as requested by the Director.
  • Maintain a trauma informed environment of wellbeing
  • Other duties, as assigned.

EDUCATION:

  • Doctorate degree in clinical or counseling psychology (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) from an APA-accredited program.
  • Completion of APA-accredited internship with experience in neuropsychology.
  • Two-year post-doctoral fellowship training in neuropsychology strongly preferred.
  • Eligible for board certification or board certified in clinical neuropsychology (ABPP).
  • License or license eligible in the state of Colorado.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Prefer a minimum of one year of supervisory experience.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge or ability to learn and practice trauma informed principles and practices.
  • Professional knowledge of traumatic brain injury, dementias, substance abuse, mental health conditions, psychiatric illnesses, and human development, coupled with professional judgment and experience related to therapeutic theories and techniques.
  • Experience with neuropsychological testing, especially related to cognitive dysfunction, memory problems, dementias, and traumatic brain injuries.
  • Familiarity with objective personality testing (MMPI-2-RF, MCMI-III/IV, PAI).
  • Familiarity with symptom validity testing.
  • Demonstrate the expertise and confidence to expand, if necessary, our neuropsychological testing inventory.
  • Knowledge, training, and experience with general aspects of psychological assessment (test administration, scoring, interpretation, report writing, treatment recommendations, and feedback).
  • Ability to effectively supervise students and engage regularly with several licensed psychologists.
  • Familiarity with DSM-5 and ICD-10, as well as diagnostic techniques.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with others and to work within an integrated team environment; comfortable consulting with other professionals, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, program managers, case managers etc.
  • Ability to work with large degree of independence.
  • Ambitious, self-starter that is excited by program development opportunities.
  • Treatment planning experience preferred.
  • Training and experience serving diverse populations; understands the need and importance of delivering multi-culturally competent mental health services.
