Position Function:

The Pulmonary Medicine NP assumes responsibilities for interventional pulmonary patients who are referred to the Chief of Pulmonary Medicine or designated MD.

Inpatient Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Perform detailed histories and physicals and prepare admission orders on patients admitted or transferred to the pulmonology service.
  • Perform supervised daily rounds on all patients under the direction of the Chief of Pulmonology including physical examination writing progress notes, ordering laboratories, issuing home care instructions and prescriptions as needed, and discharging patients as appropriate.
    1. Perform consults directly referred to the supervising MD
    2. Provide initial interpretation of x-rays and initiate definitive treatments.
    3. Dictate discharge summaries as needed.
    4. Perform procedures within the scope of specialty

    Outpatient Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

    • Initiate office follow-up and consultative patient visits under the supervision of the supervising physician.
    • Perform pre-procedural histories and physicals and admission orders on patients on the pulmonary service.
    • Screen diagnostic test results and discuss with attending MD.
    • Provide initial interpretation of x-rays and initiate definitive treatments.
    • Provide timely telephone follow-up with patients and referring MDs as part of ongoing patient management.
    • Prescribe medications and authorize refills as needed.
    1. Dictate medical summaries as correspondence letters to referring physicians.
    2. Perform procedures within the scope of specialty


    General Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

    • Provide superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers, and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards.
    • Build and maintain a detailed referring physician database.
    • Ensure follow-up and update communication with referring physicians and patients via telephone and/or fax, email or written correspondence.
    • Ensure proper communication between the pulmonary medicine service and all other applicable staff including RNs, NPs, PAs, house staff, fellows and attending physicians.
    • Prepare and submit documentation in consultation with attending physicians and fellows to ensure financial reimbursement for NP/PA/MD encounters. This involves making sure that all applicable information is coordinated, available, and contains initial NP documentation which is then made available to the attending MDs in order to maintain high quality patient care and reimbursement practices.
    • Provide patient education. Participate in the educational training of medical residents, pulmonary medicine fellows, NPs, PAs, nurses and students.
    • Participate in clinical research in the form of patient recruitment and data collection and management.
    • Participate in journal club, divisional rounds and mid-day educational conferences.

    Qualifications:

    • Graduation from and accredited NP program
      Current Massachusetts license to practice as a physician assistant or nurse practitioner
    • NCCPA Board Certification as a Physician Assistant or ANCC Board Certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
    • Five years of clinically relevant experience as a physician assistant or nurse practitioner. Experience in the diagnosis and management of complex airway disorders and pleural diseases.
    • The NP must be able to work independently and to coordinate patient care with attendings, referring physicians, fellows, medical house staff, other PAs, and other healthcare professionals.

    Certification/Licensure: Massachusetts Licensure, Mass Controlled Substance and DEA
