Overview

Lovelace Biomedical Research Institute is seeking a Clinical Veterinarian who will be responsible for providing clinical veterinary medical care to a variety of laboratory animal species; duties include diagnosis and treatment of disease, preventive medicine, animal health monitoring, and quarantine monitoring. The Clinical Veterinarian will also participate in research support of GLP and non-GLP studies involving both USDA-covered and non-covered species; this individual may manage clinical aspects of the studies, provide guidance on animal model and protocol development, and participate on the IACUC through conducting veterinary reviews. The Clinical Veterinarian may serve as a study director for research studies, will be involved in training veterinary and research personnel and is responsible for completing other duties and tasks as required or assigned.

This position requires participation in a rotating on call schedule for after hours, weekend and holiday coverage.

Qualifications

Requires Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from an AVMA accredited veterinary college or ECFVG foreign equivalency certification, must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in at least one U.S. state and have a minimum of one year of post-graduate clinical experience with laboratory animal species in a biomedical research setting; or an equivalent combination of education and training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained. Formal postdoctoral training in laboratory animal medicine and/or ACLAM board eligibility or ACLAM board certification is preferred.

Must have the knowledge and ability to ensure compliance with USDA standards and the Animal Welfare Act, The Guide for the Care & Use of Laboratory Animals, NIH Public Health Service Policy, FDA GLP regulations, DEA Regulations, AAALAC guidelines, and all state, county and city rules and regulations. Candidate must have a demonstrated understanding of research methodology, principles and procedures.

This position is located on Kirtland Air Force Base and requires a valid Driver's License and proof of insurance as well as successful completion of a background check, post offer physical exam and ability to receive various vaccinations.

Relocation may be offered for this position.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in laboratory and vivarium/animal housing environments. Will frequently stand, sit, walk, kneel, crawl, reach/work overhead, frequently lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 50 pounds, perform repetitive and perform desk-based computer tasks. Will wear personal protective equipment which may include a respirator. Will work in close proximity to research animals and may be required to work in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious agents are present which may require vaccinations.
