Medical Record Coder is responsible for timely review of patient records in order to identify an appropriate selection of codes, which will accurately reflect the reason for admission, extent of care received, and level of severity of illness. Coder is further responsible for insuring that all data elements required for federal and state reporting are collected and included in the patient ?s demographic record.POSITION REQUIREMENTSA. EDUCATION:Graduation from an accredited HIM program, OR CCS (CCA) certification. Consideration given based on employee entry coding exam, able to acquire minimal CCA from AHIMA program with progression to higher level CCS certification within a 3-5 year time frameB. EXPERIENCE:Minimum of two years ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding experience in acute care facility or strong coding exam performance. Proficient in ICD-10 coding. Requires strong verbal skills in interpersonal situations.2. CAREER PATHAdvancement into positions in the department that may require technical, or advanced educational training.3. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONSAge legend is not applicable. This position has no responsibility for the assessment, treatment, or care of patients. However, the ability to communicate and interact with patients of all ages is required.4. AMERICAN DISABILITIES ACTI. Essential Duties:This position requires knowledge of hospital and departmental policies and procedures. The ability to retrieve, communicate or otherwise present information in written, auditory, or visual fashion is essential. The methods used to express or exchange ideas are by spoken or written word. Written, telephone and manual dexterity skills are also required.II. Physical Requirements:This position requires prolonged periods of sitting with a light amount of physical work, with maximum lifting of 20 pounds, carrying and filing of medical records and documents weighing up to 10 pounds. Filing records requires reaching, pulling, pushing, bending, and stooping.III. Working Conditions:This individual spends almost 100% of his/her time in an air-conditioned building. The potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens, body fluids, or potentially infectious material is minimal to none.IV. General Education Development:This position requires reasoning, mathematical, and language skills at the levels listed below:LEVEL6 Professional school, college masters, or more5 College level, 4-5 years4 High school, plus some college or technical training3 High school education2 Eighth to tenth grade education1 Below an eighth grade educationReasoning: 4Mathematics: 4Language: 4V. Personal Protective Equipment:This position has minimal to no exposure to blood borne pathogens and therefore requires no personal protective equipment.
