Job Description

Student Business Services seeks a Collections Specialist Sr. to perform a variety of collection job functions requiring initiative and independent judgment to support the goals and objectives of Student Business Services. This position will also provide student support and handle inquiries pertaining to student account information.


Salary Range

$18.08 per hour

Essential Duties

Initiate in-house collection activities for past due student accounts receivable and Perkins loan balances for the University by phone, email, and/or letter writing.

Assure compliance with Federal, State and Institutional guidelines.

Research and analyze accounts prior to initiating debtor contact as well as on demand account research as customers inquire about their past due account balances.

Advocate on customers' behalf when charge appeals are initiated, including continual follow-up activities and customer advisement of appeal outcome.

Advise student of available re-payment options and possible university services suspension.

Determine when in-house collection efforts have been exhausted and assist in the preparation of accounts for outside collection agency assignment.

Create on-line account comments to ensure proper documentation of collection efforts utilized to either secure payment or recommend collection agency assignment.


Minimum Qualifications

Five years of related collection experience; OR, Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related field AND one year related experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

Experience in working with Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook).

Experience with PeopleSoft Student Financials.

Evidence of effective verbal and written communication and organizational skills.

Experience in Interpreting and analyzing Federal regulations.

Experience in collecting customer debts.

Experience working in a customer service driven university environment.

Experience in assisting customers on the phone and in person.

Experience in accounts receivable processing and recording.


Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.

Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.

Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.

Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.

Clearly communicate in person, over the phone and through email to perform essential functions.
