Position Title: Community Training Instructors Temporary Pool - Various Openings


Department: Workforce Development


Campus: College Wide


Additional Information: Please note: If you are a PSERS retiree, per PSERS guidelines, employment by the College as an adjunct faculty member will result in the suspension of your retirement benefits by PSERS. Multiple positions that are grant-funded temporary part-time without benefits. Temporary part-time 25 hours/week. Non-credit positions available are: Aerobic Exercise, Line Dance, Healthy Cooking, Tai Chi, Recreational Cards, Arts and Crafts, Technology Device Workshop. All positions scheduling are flexible within the time frame of Monday through Friday. Location: Senior Centers throughout Allegheny County. Instructors responsible for their own transportation. Good communication and organizational skills. Teaching experience with seniors a plus. Certification may be required for fitness-related positions.

AEROBIC EXERCISE

Course designed to introduce older adults to exercises that range from stationary chairs to floor routines

Time: Classes are held once a week for 4,6,8, or 12 consecutive weeks; 1-1/2 hours each class; Classes are conducted between 9:00am and 3:00pm


ARTS AND CRAFTS

Course designed to give older adults the opportunity to express their creativity through hands-on craft projects utilizing a variety of media.

Time: Classes are held once a week for 1, 2, or 3 consecutive weeks; 2 hours each class; classes are conducted between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.


RECREATIONAL CARDS

Course designed to engage older adults socially and mentally through participation in familiar and new card games.

Time: Classes are held once a week for 4 consecutive weeks; 2 hours each class; classes are conducted between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.


TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP

Course designed as a hands-on workshop to provide older adults with the skillset to utilize the basic features of various technology devices including smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

Time: Classes are held once a week for 1, 2, or 3 consecutive weeks; 2 hours each class; classes are conducted between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.


LINE DANCE

Course designed for older adults to introduce older adults to line dancing as an on going fun and fitness program. A combination of classic and new dances are explored.

Time: Classes are held once a week for 12 or less consecutive weeks; 2 hours each class; Classes are conducted between 9:00am and 3:00pm


HEALTHY COOKING

Course designed to encourage older adults improve their health through exploring healthy eating choices. Information is provided to demonstrate methods of preparing delicious and healthy foods and being aware of proper serving sizes. The course will use food nutrition labels to improve knowledge of daily requirements.

Time: Classes are held once a week for 3 consecutive weeks; 2 hours each class; Classes are conducted between 9:00am and 3:00pm


TAI CHI

An ancient Chinese exercise and martial art, it is designed to enhance the physical, mental and spiritual well-being for the student. Older adults will experience increased self-awareness through relaxation techniques, breathing exercises and flexibility movements. Good communication and organization skills. Experience teaching tai chi. Experience teaching seniors is a plus.

Time: Classes are held once a week for 12 weeks or less; 1-1/2 hours each class; Classes are conducted from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm; Monday through Friday.

General Summary: The primary responsibilities of the faculty are to teach and to develop the curriculum. To meet these responsibilities, faculty must remain knowledgeable about advances in their disciplines, in learning theory, and in pedagogy. Faculty portfolios will include contributions and program development and show evidence of ongoing professional development.


Requirements:


Applicants for Community Education teaching assignments are expected to have strong communication skills. Applicants are expected to have teaching experiences; experiences in the discipline/area to be taught.

Duties: 1. The primary responsibilities of faculty are to teach and to develop the curriculum. Prepare and provide students with course outlines that support learning objectives set forth in the course syllabus. Develop and measure learning outcomes. Assess student performance and maintain grade records.

2. Create an effective learning environment through the use of a variety of instructional methods.

3. Collaborate in the development and continued assessment of learning outcomes for use in program reviews and curriculum revision.

4. Work with other program and/or discipline faculty to complete scheduled program reviews and to use the findings to revise the curriculum.

5. Participate in appropriate professional development activities to assure currency in both discipline, knowledge and instructional methods.

6. Participate in department/discipline, division, campus, and college meetings and committees.

7. Participate in college projects, surveys, studies, and reports that relate to the discipline or program.

8. Collaborate in the development of program and/or discipline promotional materials.

9. Support the college's goals.

10. Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
