Department Information
The City of Aurora Building Division is a division of Public Works. The Building Division has three primary areas: the Permit Center Building Plan Review, and Building Inspections. Our goal is to ensure safe buildings and properties for our citizens through a collaborative working relationship with our construction partners.

The City of Aurora is seeking a qualified Public Lighting Program Manager to directly, or through consultant contracts, develop and manage a public lighting program within the Public Works Department.

The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come, first-serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Determine appropriate lighting levels for parking lots, public streets and pedestrian walkways
  • Develop standard details and specifications for approved light poles, foundations, fixtures, and other attachments
  • Develop various processes including: site and civil plan review, maintenance, on-call/emergency response, utility locates, and capital replacement
  • Assist in determining positions and develop appropriate job descriptions or scopes of work for program positions and/or consultants
  • Assist in determining appropriate levels of staffing and funding
  • Provides technical expertise to Public Works and other departments and divisions
  • Reviews construction plans and specifications
  • Ensures compliance with design, City policies and procedures, and governmental regulations
  • Negotiates contracts, makes presentations, recommends for approval construction documents for public construction
  • May supervise support staff and/or lead multi-disciplinary teams
  • Performs additional duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in Civil, Structural, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or similar related field).

Experience:
  • At least six (6) years professional level engineering experience in design, construction and maintenance of public and commercial lighting and lighting systems
  • Experience developing or managing a municipal public lighting program preferred

Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Colorado Drivers License with good driving record
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer or Architect in the United States, State of Colorado, or ability to obtain within 6 months

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of principles, practices and theories of outdoor lighting design, construction and maintenance
  • Technical knowledge of LED fixtures and drivers
  • International, federal, state and municipal building design requirements, codes and specifications

Skills:
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, and project management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication

Abilities to:
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens
  • Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Establish and fulfill goals and objectives
  • Plan and schedule work operations
WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:
  • Sedentary physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 10 pounds
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, walking and standing
  • Vision for data analysis and preparation
  • Hand/eye coordination for operation of computer keyboard
  • Foot/eye coordination for operation of motor vehicle for field inspections
  • Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens

Work Environment:
  • Primarily works in a clean, comfortable environment
  • May perform some outdoor work for field inspections

  • Personal computer
  • Operates a motor vehicle
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
