The City of Aurora Water Utility Worker performs manual labor duties and will assist with routine maintenance and repair functions for one of two divisions within the Aurora Water Department.
Summary of Divisions:

Pumping
The Water Utility Worker in the Pumping section reports to a central location each morning and then drives to and performs work at remote sites within and outside of the City. The position normally works with at least one other person but requires the independent initiative to complete assigned tasks. This position works in the distribution and collection systems working with raw, potable, reuse and stormwater as well as raw sewage on a daily basis. Work assignments include pump/motor oil changes, inspections, repair, remove foreign objects and rebuild. Operated valves, clean and remove objects from check valves and rebuild. Clean and wash wet wells. Wash and chlorinate storage tanks. Climb water storage tanks to heights of 40 feet using proper safety equipment. Mandatory participation in the Emergency Standby Rotation (average every 6 weeks) and participate in the City's snow removal program. Maintain CDL certification after training.

Treatment
The Water Utility Worker in the Water Treatment Division participates in a number of activities at the water and wastewater treatment plants that include but are not limited to repair and maintenance of treatment plant equipment and facilities, receiving chemical deliveries including chlorine, learning the operation of the treatment plant, snow removal, and facility housekeeping. The person in this job will work around hazardous chemicals, perform laboratory testing, and must be able to pass a respiratory medical physical and it is recommended they have the Hepatitis B immunization series.

Types of positions available:
  • Temporary: Employees who work an average of 40 hours a week and are eligible for medical benefits only and paid holidays. This temporary position will be established on a yearly contract and does have the possibility to be converted into a fulltime position, per the needs of the department.

The City of Aurora is pleased to offer:
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) training
    • Once an employee has successfully completed training, testing, and obtains their CDL, they will be eligible for a 2.5% increase to their base pay
  • An annual bonus up to $500 (paid in December if eligibility criteria is met) for individuals whose job requirement is to maintain a CDL

  • The Aurora Water Department will provide uniforms shortly after you start, for full time (not temporary) employees
  • The Aurora Water Department will provide all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (besides steel/safety toe boots)
The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come, first-serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists work crews in the repair and maintenance of water, wastewater, reuse, and storm drain pump stations, water storage tanks, and treatment facilities
  • Performs routine and grounds maintenance
  • Loads and unloads tools
  • Maintains facilities equipment
  • Required to participate in confined space entries at whatever capacities assigned
  • Required to be in the rotation for standby call for the assigned facility
  • Will assist with snow removal activities and snow standby call duties
  • Basic knowledge of the city computer systems; and performs additional duties as assigned
  • Performs other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED
Experience:
  • At least one (1) year of related maintenance experience
  • Experience with mechanical machinery and/or water/wastewater utility preferred

Repairing and Maintaining Mechanical Equipment:
  • Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of mechanical principles.

Problem Sensitivity:
  • The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.

Attention to Detail:
  • The job requires being careful about detail and thorough in completing work tasks.
Abilities:
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time
  • To understand oral and written instructions
  • To operate or receive training on various types of maintenance equipment
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds repetitively, with or without assistance
  • To work shifts, nights, overtime, standby, and call back duty.
  • Must be able to wear protective equipment required for the job and able to meet requirements under the Aurora Water Respiratory Protection Program

Licenses and/r Certificates Required:
  • Colorado driver's license with a good driving history
  • Current Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain a Colorado Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of hire date
WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands:
  • Moderate to heavy physical work depending upon the assigned function
  • May require ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds, with or without assistance
  • May require frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance
  • Considerable walking and standing
  • Frequently performs activities requiring a full range of body movement including bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and climbing
  • Hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of equipment and vehicles
  • Vision for reading gauges and written instructions
  • Hearing/listening for instructions and warning signals
Work Environment:
  • Works indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, and fumes.
  • Some work may be performed in confined spaces with exposure to raw sewage; will be exposed to low and medium electrical voltage.
  • Mandatory participation in the Emergency Standby Rotation and participate in the City's snow removal program.

Equipment Used:
  • Operates mechanical equipment and vehicles common to utilities maintenance functions
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
