JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervisor, performs complex work of considerable difficulty interpreting and translating Spanish to English and English to Spanish for judicial proceedings in Superior and Justice Courts.
Example of Duties

Work in this classification requires an individual to be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily. TYPICAL CLASSIFICATION ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Interprets in consecutive and simultaneous modes English/Spanish and Spanish/English in hearings and proceedings for Superior Court and Justice Courts, interprets in non-courtroom settings for attorneys and others during interviews with defendants, victims and witnesses.
  • Performs sight translations.
  • Prepares certified translations of written materials for court use or upon court order.
  • Prepares and reviews transcriptions and translations from audio/video recordings in Spanish.
  • Interprets in telephonic and video court proceedings.
  • Testifies in court as an expert witness on language usage.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, customer records, and restricted County information.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Certificate of attendance at a program of Court Interpretation.
  • Five (5) years' experience as a simultaneous interpreter in any setting including (3) three years of court interpreter experience in the judiciary.
  • Tier 1 or Tier 2 Court Interpreter credentials per Arizona Supreme Court Order 2016-02. Successful candidate has 24 months from date of hire to become certified at Tier 3 in order to maintain employment.
Special Qualifications:
  • Valid Arizona State Driver's License at time of hire.
Preference:
Applicants with Tier 3 or Tier 4 Court Interpreter credentials at time of application.
Supplemental Information

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the Spanish and English languages to include proper spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • Knowledge of demonstrated proficiency in proper regional and idiomatic usage in both English and Spanish.
  • Knowledge of court proceedings, Interpreter Policies and Code of Ethics.
  • Knowledge of court rules, regulations and procedures as they relate to court interpretation.
  • Knowledge of legal, medical, forensic and slang terminology in English and the equivalents in Spanish.
  • Knowledge of use and application of legal materials, both on-line and in book form, to perform research activities as required.
  • Ability to provide precise English/Spanish and Spanish/English translations.
  • Ability to interpret in the simultaneous, consecutive and sight translation modes.
  • Ability to express self clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, in both English and Spanish.
  • Ability to use data processing systems and other office equipment and machines.
  • Ability to react to physical confrontations quickly and effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with judges, attorneys, employees, other agencies and the public.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Independent body mobility to stand, walk, bend, and sit for prolonged periods of time and/or drive a vehicle. Manual dexterity to reach and grasp; manual dexterity to hand write or use computer keyboard; vision sufficient to see/read; hear and speak to communicate with customers in person and over the phone.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Position is primarily located in an indoor office environment. May be required to perform interpreter duties in other than indoor environments, as necessary. Will be required to drive throughout the County.
