Incumbents must be able to work weekends and overnight PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The City of Aurora is seeking a Custodian to maintain the cleanliness of the Central Recreation facility for its Recreation division of the Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces Department. The Recreation division provides fun recreational programs and facilities for all ages aimed at improving the overall physical and mental health of Aurora's citizens.

  • Responsible for the overall cleanliness and sanitation of interior and exterior of the Central Recreation Center
  • Perform a variety of routine cleaning tasks of a multi-level/multi room building and understands occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • General knowledge of custodial procedures, building systems, and the ability to perform minor repairs
  • Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming them
  • Gather and empty trash
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors
  • Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment
  • Steam-clean or shampoo carpets
  • Clear debris from grounds
  • Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas, using snow shovels, and spread snow melting chemicals
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, to
  • prevent damage to floors and fixtures
  • Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks
  • Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings
  • Store room up keep and organization
  • Maintenance and upkeep of equipment and supplies
  • Basic record keeping methods, and ability to read directions, chemical labels, and work documents
  • Ability to train part-time custodial staff on proper cleaning, detailing, and building procedures
  • Take initiative to improve the building quality by meeting the needs and expectations of the Central users and patrons, as well as the entire Central staff
  • Provide outstanding customer service and get along with coworkers, patrons, and supervisors
  • Concentrate and accomplish tasks despite interruptions, perform a variety of tasks simultaneously or in rapid succession, and perform job responsibilities in a timely manner to meet scheduled deadlines
  • Monitor building security and safety following set guidelines and procedures
  • Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems
  • Perform other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
Experience:
  • At least 1 year of experience working in custodial services.
  • 2+ years of experience preferred
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge
: Knowledge of building janitorial and maintenance practices.

Abilities:
  • knowledge of building maintenance, cleaning practices, and methods
  • knowledge of various tools and equipment used to complete multiple duties
  • knowledge of chemicals used for cleaning duties
  • knowledge of safety procedures for equipment and chemicals including an understanding of SDS
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Basic computer skills required and the ability to use email
  • Ability to work independently and complete tasks to expectation with minimal supervision
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions with minimal or no supervision
  • Ability to listen to all concerns and make proper adjustments
  • Knowledge of and experience in sanitizing to meet Covid-19 safety standards
WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands: Moderate to heavy physical work; requires the ability to lift a maximum of
50 pounds without assistance; requires the ability to lift a maximum of 100 pounds with
assistance; lifting, carrying, walking and standing.

Work Environment: Works primarily in clean, comfortable environment.

Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel

Equipment Used: Standard business and professional equipment and tools associated with the services being provided. Use assigned power equipment and hand tools; buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washers, high speed buffers and vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of facility.
