JOB SUMMARY
Performs venipuncture and procurement of other bacteriological and laboratory specimens; coordinates referred laboratory samples; answers telephones, performs patient admits, test order entry, and other related clerical duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/EXPECTATIONS
  • Skillfully performs phlebotomy following policy ensuring proper patient ID by using handhelds, timely response, appropriate banding of BB patients, and elimination of unnecessary draws. Shows expertise in capillary puncture and neonatal screen collection. Assists in phlebotomy training providing useful feedback and coaching.
  • Performs patient registration for referred specimens accurately verifying complete physician orders received and diagnoses entered correctly.
  • Enters orders into Meditech verifying completeness of order, selecting correct MD, routing results appropriately and documenting medical necessity requirement follow up. Efficiently uses scheduling module to record pending orders and schedule recurring patients for future appointments.
  • Competently performs and assigns EKGs I minimize clerical errors and meeting TATs. Correctly instruct patients in Holter Monitoring setup.
  • Efficiently handles all patient specimens including accessioning in computer, deliver to departments and processing referred specimens.
  • Delivers lab supplies, maintains phlebotomy equipment, backs up customer service specialist answering phones and filing supply orders promptly.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma required. Medical Assistant training strongly preferred.
  • Completion of medical terminology course and ASCP Certification for Phlebotomy preferred.
  • CPR certification required.
  • Two years office experience (including working with word processing and other computer software programs) in the medical field and/or laboratory work experience preferred.
