Position Summary

The University of New Mexicos Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) seeks applications from highly experienced professionals for the position of Director, Environmental Health and Safety to direct the development, University-wide implementation and maintenance of safety and regulatory compliance programs and operations to include: Environmental Affairs, Fire Safety, Accident and Incident Reporting, Occupational Safety, and Laboratory Safety.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Ensures compliance with all federal, state and local regulations and standards involving environmental management, chemical control, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, fire and life safety.

Reviews and analyzes data and devises risk minimization programs.

Designs, establishes, and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the organization's goals and objectives; oversees recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of unit staff.

Develops and manages annual budgets for the organization and performs periodic cost and productivity analyses.

Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement.

Coordinates federal, state, and locally required training programs targeted to reduce employee injuries and lost work time.

Recommends, participates in the development of, and implements related University policies and procedures; advises University planning and policy committees on safety and environmental compliance issues.

Keeps abreast of pending regulatory developments through reference sources; obtains insight on legislative agendas at State and Federal levels.

Represents the organization and the University to various institutional constituencies, as well as externally to corporations, funding agencies, government agencies, and other colleges and universities, as appropriate.

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Professional work history that demonstrates the following:

Executive level experience in developing, implementing and managing safety and regulatory compliance programs and operations.

o Implementing strategic and innovative operational planning that anticipates future consequences

Executive management experience over a large organization with varied functions to include:

o Administration

o Budget preparation and fiscal management

o Stakeholder and community engagement

o Examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.

Ability to communicate and interact with officials at all levels of government
