Job Description

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office is seeking an enthusiastic Director of Academic Services. Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Academic Advising, the Director will work in partnership with one other Director of Academic Services to provide leadership and management for activities related to The College Academic Advising hub in Armstrong Hall. The Director of Academic Services will work within the Office of Student and Academics Programs leadership team, transforming and reimagining student services for new first-year and transfer undergraduates in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Hub includes 22 professional academic advisors, one assistant director, one associate director, and two full-time front reception staff. The Hub model provides academic advising for approximately 3000 first-year students and 1500 new transfer students, programs to enhance student engagement with all aspects of ASU, and career readiness services – all in one centralized location. The Hub academic advisors teach the required LIA 101 first-year seminar course to their assigned cohort. Salary Range

$85,000 - $92,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

  • Assisting with the development of long- and short-range student success goals (persistence, retention, and graduation) and strategies for The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. 
  • Managing, hiring, training, and supervising 6 to 11 academic advisors, 1 or 2 advising coordinators, and one assistant or associate director.
  • Creating a collaborative space among Hub personnel to support the development and success of professional staff and students. 
  • Overseeing the academic advising responsibilities of new first-year students for one full year, and transfer students for their initial academic advising interaction in The College.
  • Developing, supporting, and mentoring those teaching student success courses and workshops offered through the Armstrong Hall Student Services Hub.
  • Overseeing and managing various student-centered administrative processes.
  • Working with other Dean’s Office and University staff on programs and initiatives focused on undergraduates (including, but not limited to, New Student Orientation, Fall Welcome activities, and the administration of The College’s first year success courses).
  • Partnering with student services professionals in our academic units to accomplish the student services and academic advising goals of The College.
  • Creating programs and strategies to support specific groups of students (for example, students transitioning between academic majors; academically at-risk students, such as students who are on probation or have been academically disqualified; etc.). 
  • Helping to assess and evaluate the effectiveness of Armstrong Hall’s student success polices, programs, and initiatives (including the preparation and dissemination of reports using various analytic tools and databases). 
  • Representing The College and serving on ASU committees focused on advising and student success.
  • Performing related administrative functions as required along with other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in a related field AND six (6) years experience in one or more of the following: advising, recruitment/retention, other related student services in a college/university environment, which includes four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising academic advisors.
  • Experience collaborating with a large and diverse teams focused on providing student services and student support.
  • Experience with the onboarding and orientation of new first-year and transfer students.
  • Experience teaching and supporting student success courses and workshops.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated use of technology tools (i.e. PeopleSoft, DARS, Salesforce, Analytics, etc.) for managing student success. 
  • Skill utilizing and analyzing student success and progress data and in preparing clear and concise reports. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate, build relationships, and collaborate with other staff and faculty to develop and implement programs and initiatives.
  • Experience designing and implementing student support programs.
  • Knowledge of national trends and best practices in support of student success.


Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include resolving conflicts, coping with moderate stress levels, along with the requirements to complete tasks within set time constraints and frequently changing priorities.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Requires some attendance at evening and weekend events.
  • This is an in-person position located on ASU's Tempe Campus that may provide limited opportunities for remote work of up to 2 days a week.
