Position Summary

The University of New Mexico (UNM) is seeking an experienced and visionary leader to serve as the Director of Building and Landscape Services. This strategic leadership role provides oversight and operational direction for core service areas including building maintenance, landscaping, custodial services, and recycling across the Universitys campuses.

The Facility Services division-comprising Building &Landscape Services, Facilities Design & Construction, Facilities CustomerServices, and Technical Services-is responsible for maintaining more than10 million square feet of facilities and 680 acres of open space. The Director will ensure an integrated administrative support model that adheres toinstitutional standards, promotes operational excellence, and supportsstrategic priorities across the division.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Facility Services, the Director of Building and Landscape Services is responsible for ensuring operational excellence, maintaining high service standards, and managing resources efficiently to sustain a safe, clean, and welcoming campus environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and day-to-day leadership for building maintenance, landscape, custodial, and recycling operations.
  • Develop and execute service level objectives, operational plans, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Lead the design and execution of preventive maintenance programs to extend asset life and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Supervise and support a large, diverse workforce-overseeing hiring, performance management, training, and professional development.
  • Direct the development and oversight of annual operating budgets, ensuring fiscal responsibility and effective resource utilization.
  • Advise senior leadership on infrastructure needs and support long-term campus facility planning.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders on capital projects, renovations, and strategic construction initiatives.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement in service delivery, safety, and customer satisfaction.
  • Actively participate as a member of the Facilities Services leadership team, contributing to University-wide planning and initiatives.

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.

  • Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 8 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive leadership experience managing complex facilities operations, preferably in higher education, healthcare, or public-sector organizations.
  • Proven ability to lead and implement strategic planning initiatives in large, multifaceted environments.
  • Deep expertise in facilities management best practices, building systems, sustainability, and operational compliance.
  • Demonstrated success in managing and developing diverse, high-performing teams.
  • Strong experience in budget development, financial management, and operational planning at a large scale.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multiple departments and stakeholder groups.
  • A record of driving operational improvements through innovation, data-informed decision-making, and policy development.
