Definition

Under direct supervision of the Irrigation Maintenance Supervisor (Irrigation), performs an array of semi-skilled drainage and irrigation maintenance and construction related duties: including labor on canals, ditches, culverts, laterals, pump and well maintenance. Participates in drainage and irrigation maintenance tasks using various hand/power tools and equipment to clean, maintain, and repair Community drainage and irrigation structures. Works in a variety of weather conditions while maintaining public safety and removing hazards. This position is treated as a FLSA non-exempt position, considered a DRIVING position and subject to working on-call and weekend hours.

Essential Functions: (Essential functions may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, ability, skill, and other characteristics. Examples of Tasks

1. Assists with the maintenance and construction of Community drainage and irrigation assets, which may include tasks such as removal of material or debris from drainage and irrigation structures; repairs of drainage and irrigation; and other maintenance measures. Utilizes hand tools and equipment to perform work. May operate heavy equipment that does not require a CDL such as gannons, rollers, forklifts, etc.

2. Having a basic understanding of drainage and irrigation structures, installs, repairs, maintains and inspects drainage and irrigation structures in accordance with Community design standards and Flood Control District of Maricopa County (FCDMC) standards. Tasks include placing new culverts, removing or repairing damaged drainage and irrigation structures, and performing inspections.

3. Assists with the installation of drainage and irrigation structures. Delivers, sets up, and removes temporary traffic control in accordance with approved traffic control plan or work order.

4. Removes vegetation and hazards that obstruct drainage systems, block drainage systems, or otherwise affect proper conveyance of drainage and irrigation water.

5. Performs inspections of drainage and irrigation assets such as culverts, pumps, catch basins, etc. Clearly documents and reports any deficiencies.

6. Conducts daily walk around inspection of equipment prior to use to ensure that it is operating safely and properly. Cleans and services equipment after use. Performs basic routine maintenance. Reports any mechanical or operational problems to the supervisor.

7. Performs other job-related duties and special assignments as required.

Knowledges, Abilities, Skills and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, rules, customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, practices, and techniques used in general construction, maintenance, and repair of drainage and irrigation structures.
  • Knowledge of basic tools and equipment used in general drainage and irrigation construction and maintenance, including basic operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, principles, and practices for safe motor vehicle operation and maintenance.


  • Knowledge of applicable safety practices.
  • Knowledge of the addresses and locations of valves, gates, pumps, canals and laterals within the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of operations of cement mixer and tools needed to perform various canal, ditch, culvert, lateral, pump and well maintenance jobs.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
  • Ability to safely operate various tools and equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems.
  • Ability to perform semi-skilled tasks involving culvert construction, maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to lift, move, and carry heavy objects (weighing 50 pounds or more) for long distances (more than 20 feet) and to otherwise physically perform and complete work related tasks.
  • Ability to work for extended periods performing activities which require stooping, reaching, lifting, bending, and standing.
  • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
  • Ability to effectively work with co-workers.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing managers, supervisors, staff, and the general public.
  • Ability to interpret sketches and follow oral and written instructions including work orders.
  • Ability to use a computer to complete leave requests, training, and other basic tasks.
  • Ability to use a tablet to view, manage, document and complete work orders.
  • Ability to follow OSHA requirements.


Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED and a minimum of one (1) year full-time work experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the tasks described.

Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of training and experience that would enable the candidate to satisfactorily perform and meet the duties and responsibilities required may be considered in meeting the stated minimum qualifications.

Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License.

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
