Purpose Statement

Educational Assistant - Special Education (Resource)

The job of Educational Assistant - Special Education (Resource) is done for the purpose/s of assisting in the supervision and instruction of special needs students under the supervision of a certificated teacher. This includes observing and documenting student progress, implementing plans for instruction, providing clerical support to staff, and social/emotional support for students.

Other Functions

Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the teacher for the purpose of providing an opportunity for all special education students to participate in classroom

Administers first aid and medical assistance for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.

Assists in the instruction of students in the special education program, one-on-one or in break-out sessions (e.g. math groups, science experiments, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, etc.) for the purpose of supporting IEP goals for remediation of student deficiencies and ensuring students success.

Confers with teachers on a regular basis for the purpose of assisting in evaluating special education student progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.

Maintains instructional materials and/or student files/records (e.g. adapting instructional materials, student files, checking papers, attendance, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items and/or providing reliable information.

Monitors special education students (e.g. lunch, playground, during life enrichment activities, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.

Participates in meetings, program workshops, and seminars (e.g. inservice, training, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information about the program and/or program related activities.

Performs non violent crisis intervention techniques for the purpose of de-escalating crisis situations and behaviors.

Performs record keeping (daily data on instruction and/or behavior) and clerical functions (e.g. correcting papers, copying, instructional materials, MIPS forms, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the teacher in providing necessary records/materials.

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Promotes good social habits for the purpose of improving the quality of student;s outcomes and encouraging students' development.

Provides ongoing feedback for the purpose of informing the teachers of students progress and creating a plan to return student to the classroom as a positive member.

Provides support in the reinforement of academic instruction taught by a teacher for individuals or small groups for the purpose of meeting learning goals, as described by an IEP and/or district benchmarks.

Educational Assistant - Special Education (Resource)

Provides support in the reinforcement of behavioral plans designed by IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions for the purpose of assisting in meeting special education students needs and providing a consistent environment.

Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injured student, fights, etc.) for the purpose of assisting in resolving immediate safety concerns.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; administering first aid; operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOW LEDGE is required to perform basic math; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: instructional procedures and practices; age appropriate student activities; safety practices and procedures; behavior and crisis management techniques; and behavior patterns and developmental limitations of special needs students.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with similar types of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing and maintaining effective relationships with students and co-workers; adapting to changing work priorities; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team; and working with constant interruptions.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 15% sitting, 15% walking, and 70% standing. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
