Educational Assistant - Special Education (Self Contained Classroom)

Purpose Statement The job of Educational Assistant - Special Education (Self Contained Classroom) is done for the purpose/s of providing assistance to students that receive academic and social emotional services in a self-contained classroom; monitoring students during classroom and non-classroom times; providing for special health care needs; developing students' daily living and behavioral/social skills.

Other Functions

Administers first aid and medical assistance, including but not limited to toileting and diapering and misc. medical procedures after specialized training's involving tube feeding, gastrostomy tubes, colostomy bags, trachs and oxygen for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.

Assists students individually or in small groups with lesson assignments (e.g. math, reading, writing, language, etc.) for the purpose of reinforcing learning concepts and reaching their academic goals and potential.

Confers with teachers, health professionals, and/or other community agency personnel as directed for the purpose of assisting in the evaluation of students progress and/or implementing students behavioral objectives.

Demonstrates appropriate behavior for the purpose of creating a comfortable, supportive environment and reinforcing students objectives.

Establishes positive individual relationships with referred students for the purpose of building the students confidence and self esteem though recognition, rewards and regular training of age appropriate behavior.

Monitors individual or small groups of students (e.g. lunch, playground, classroom, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive environment.

Participates in meetings, program workshops, and seminars (e.g. inservice, training, CPI training, first aid, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information about the program and/or program related activities.

Performs non violent crisis intervention techniques and restraints for the purpose of de-escalating crisis situations to provide the best care, welfare, safety and security for all.

Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. medicaid forms, daily journal, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the teacher, therapist, school counselor in providing necessary records/materials.

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Promotes good social habits for the purpose of improving the quality of students outcomes and encouraging students' development.

Provides ongoing feedback for the purpose of informing teacher of students progress and creating a plan to return student to the classroom as a positive member.

Provides support in the implementation of behavioral management steps/procedures for the purpose of improving students' academic success through a defined behavioral program.

Educational Assistant - Special Education (Self Contained Classroom)

Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: administering first aid; operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOW LEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: instructional/tutorial procedures and practices; intervention techniques for emergency situations; age appropriate activities; stages of child development; safety practices and

ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with similar types of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing and maintaining effective working relationships (especially with students); maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team and with frequent interruptions; and working in a physically hazardous environment.

Responsibility Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization's services.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent climbing and balancing, significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 60% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Required Testing: Certificates and Licenses 60 College Semester Hours OR Passing Score on the Para Professional Test Crisis Intervention Training Levels 1 and 2
