Position Summary

The Center for Development and Disability (CDD), established in 1990, is New Mexico's University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research and Service. These centers, authorized by the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act, build the capacities of states and communities to respond to the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

The CDD is recruiting an Educational Consultant to support the work scope of the Project for NM Children and Youth who are Deaf-Blind and Autism programs within the Autism & Other Developmental Disabilities Division (AODD).

The Project for NM Children and Youth Who are Deaf-Blind is a federally and state funded program that provides consultation and training to service providers, educational teams, and families in NM by disseminating best practice recommendations to facilitate improved educational outcomes for children who are deaf-blind.

The successful candidate will provide in-person and distance consultation and technical assistance, training, and coaching in community settings including early intervention and schools throughout the state, to individuals involved in the education of children with multiple disabilities including deaf-blindness. The Education Consultant must have the knowledge to select, implement and teach evidence-based practices appropriate for home and classroom environments within area of professional specialty.

The Education Consultant will provide consultation reports and assist with program development, reports, grants and proposals. The applicant will participate in school and division meetings, task force/committees pertaining to AODD work scope.

The Education Consultant will also research, develop, and deliver consultation and professional development in the areas of assessment, communication development, vision, hearing, transition, literacy, and access to the general education setting for students who are deaf-blind. Program services will be provided through collaboration with student's educational team and family.

Program consultation and training will be provided throughout NM through on-site visits and use of distance technology. This position may require monthly/quarterly travel throughout the state of New Mexico, with occasional overnight stay.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Experience

  • providing technical assistance and consultative services to educational teams, families and service providers of children with multiple disabilities including deaf-blindness, in areas of assessment, communication development, literacy, transition support, vision and hearing;
  • implementing, teaching and training in evidence based practices for children with multiple disabilities including deaf-blindness;
  • with providing coaching and support to families, professionals and paraprofessionals supporting children with multiple disabilities including deaf-blindness;
  • with transition services and employment needs of students with multiple disabilities including deaf-blindness;
  • working with a school district;
  • working as a collaborative team member to accomplish work scope;
  • with program development, grant and report writing.
