Job Description

SummaryUnder the direction of the Education Coordinator, facilitates the educational process for all Cocopah children of Middle School age, grades 6th through 8th.

Education requirements

High School Diploma or GED required
AA in education field or any combination of education and experience preferred.

Experience requirements

Two years of experience in education setting.

Qualifications

Current, Valid Arizona Driver’s License.
Must be able to meet the Tribal Motor Vehicle Insurance requirements.
Successful candidate will be subject to pre-employment and on-going random drug/alcohol testing.
Must be able to undergo and pass a Bureau of Indian Affairs background investigation.
Testing may be required.

Responsibilities

Educational advising of Middle School students as needed. Advisor will work with each students school counselor to determine individualized educational plans. Communicate with students and parents to encourage the educational plan towards promotion to High School.

Must be able to identify the early signs of a learning disability in students. The Advisor must work with the school and parents to facilitate the process of testing for disabilities.

Coordinates the J.O.M (Johnson O’Malley) Summer program with the assistance of the Education Department staff members.

Monitor the progress of students by visiting the campus where the students are attending classes. Advisors will visit students under the cooperation with the schools and their prospective school counselors.

Monitors grades and attendance. Advisor will collect semester transcripts and yearly transcripts to determine academic progress of each student towards promotion to High School. Advisor will collect progress reports during the school year to determine academic progress of each student. Students will be contacted in academic progress is not made and be inducted into the tutoring program.

Attendance reports will be collected weekly. Student with truancy issues will be monitored on a daily basis. Any students who are habitually truant will be referred to the Truant Officer.

Maintains contact with parents and informs them of their student’s progress and identifies problem areas. Advisor will meet parents and students to determine an educational academic plan for success towards promotion to High School. This plan may include tutoring and supplemental programs.

Works with school officials to develop individual educational plans to assist the students in correcting problems that may impair or hinder their educational progress. This may include informing students and parents of possible learning disabilities or social hindrances that affect the student.

Prepares and submits reports to the Education Coordinator.

Skills

Ability to communicate, both orally and in written form, clearly and effectively with students, staff and parents.

Ability to work independently and possess a solid working knowledge of the educational process.

Knowledge of the Cocopah Tribe/Native American customs.

Knowledgeable in the use of data processing systems.
