POSITION TITLE: EMPLOYEE HEALTH REGISTERED NURSE

DEPARTMENT: HUMAN RESOURCES

I. POSITION SUMMARY

Plans, organizes, implements and evaluates health programs for employees, in coordination with hospital departments, in order to maintain health and to provide appropriate intervention when injury or illness has occurred.

II. ACCOUNTABILITY

The Employee Health Clinician is directly accountable to the Infection Control Manager. He/she works in collaboration with the designated Employee Health Physician, the consulting Occupational Health Physician, the Chairman of the Infection Control Committee (or designee), Vice President Human Resources (under whom the Employee Health Program falls administratively.

III. QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Graduate of an NLN-accredited School of Nursing - (BSN or actively matriculated into an approved program in Baccalaureate Nursing preferred)
  2. Current licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Registered Nurse
  3. Two years experience in Clinical Nursing practice.
  4. Certification Occupational Health (COHN) preferred.
  5. Experience in Employee or Occupational Health preferred.
  6. Certified in Basic Life Support.

            4. V. RESPONSIBILITIES

              A. Implements the hospital-wide program for Employee Health as outlined in the Employee Health Policies & Procedures

              1. Performs job related pre-employment health appraisal screenings including review of physical exam records and immunization history, employee interviews, and updating of immunizations as needed.

              2. Makes initial and follow-up (as appropriate) assessment of employees who become ill or are injured during their work shift:

              a. Evaluates and treats minor injuries including superficial wounds not requiring suturing.

              b. Orders routine diagnostic tests and x-rays following medically approved guidelines and/or protocols.

              c. Administers certain medications specified in medically approved guidelines or protocols.

              d. Consults with the designated Employee Health Physician or the Chairman of the Infection Control Committee regarding physical findings and course of treatment when necessary.

              e. Refers for additional treatment as needed to ER, Primary Care Provider, Physician Specialist, etc., according to established protocols.

              f. Ensures that written clearance is provided for employees who are returning to work:

              (a). After absence of three (3) days or more,

              (b). Following industrial/work related injury, or

              (c). After exposure to/development of specified communicable diseases.

              3. Follows progress and maintains documentation of employees with work-related injury or illness.

              a. Provides written documentation and verbal information to Human Resources and Department Heads on Workman's Compensation issues.

              b. Follows up and documents on all critical exposures per state and federal regulations and Infection Control protocol.

              c. Retrieves and copies ER records of all employees seen for work-related injuries or illness when Employee Health Service is closed.

              d. Notifies the Safety Officer, Safety Committee Chairperson, and Department Head of any health hazard identified in the course of screening any job related injury or illness for prompt resolution of the issue.

              e. Develops and maintains a system to review employees with disability and/or workman's compensation injuries.

              f. Coordinates processes designed to safely return the employee to the work force.

              g. Follows up and documents on all work-related incidents accidents in a timely manner in compliance with government and insurance regulations and guidelines (e.g. OSHA 300 Log, etc.).

              4. Maintains and evaluates immunization and medical surveillance programs.

              a. Tracks and administers vaccines according to current CDC/HICPAC recommendations.

              b. Conducts and documents mandated medical surveillance (as appropriate).

              5. Maintains Employee Health documentation:

              a. Documents employee-specific information in Employee Health records and maintains confidentiality of these records.

              b. Keeps appropriate statistics regarding Employee Health Services.

              c. Maintains computerized Employee Health database.

              B. Integrates Employee Health into hospital activities and develops an awareness about the Employee Health program.

              1. Participates in education of employees regarding health and safety.

              a. Provides one-to-one education and counseling as the need arises

              b. Provides group educational programs as requested or as the need arises on current Employee Health issues/topics.

              c. Participates in the development and/or dissemination of educational posters, handouts, brochures, etc.

              d. Participates in the maintenance of the Safety Fair displays and NetLearning modules.

              2. Acts as a resource to employees and managers

              a. Encourages and motivates employees to practice health maintenance by utilizing available resources within the Caritas System as indicated, including physician referral, smoking cessation, NORCAP, diabetes education, etc.

              b. Counsels/refers employees with personal problems that may affect job performance.

              c. Receives employee concerns regarding ergonomic, air quality, or work safety issues:

              (1) Notifies and/or involves appropriate departments or individuals in investigation and follow-up (e.g. Risk Management, Administration, Infection Control, Safety Officer, etc.).

              (2) Maintains communication with employee regarding progress in the investigation and follow-up of concerns.

              (3) Documents steps taken to respond to concerns or resolve issues

              d. Assists managers in dealing with health-related issues affecting their employees.

              C. Cooperates with other members of the health care team.

              1. Collaborates with Infection Control to plan and implement systems to monitor, prevent, or treat exposures to communicable diseases.

              2. Serves as a member of the Infection Control Committee and presents a quarterly report on employee infections/exposures for review by the committee.

              3. Serves as a member of the Safety Committee and presents a monthly report on safety-related issues for review by the committee.

              4. Maintains required statistics for OSHA, the DPH, and posts OSHA 300 log annually (per regulation) in collaboration with Human Resources. Submits sharps injury log annually to DPH per regulations.

              5. Initiates and/or participates in quality improvement studies as appropriate. Reports results (as appropriate) to Performance Improvement Steering Committee, Safety Committee, Infection Control Committee, and/or Department Heads for follow-up.

              VI. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

              A. Meets hospitals mandatory requirements for annual education.

              B. Participates in professional meetings and/or organizations to network and expand knowledge base.
