Nature of Work, Essential Functions & KSA's

NATURE OF WORK
Under the immediate supervision of the Deputy City Engineer, the Engineering Intern is responsible for assisting the Public Works department staff in routine office duties and field tasks related to daily operations, capital project administration, private development activities, field study and analysis, and construction issues.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Assists engineering staff with collecting field measurements and data, quantities, photographs and other tasks relating to the investigation, development, design and layout of engineering capital and private development projects.
  2. Performs traffic surveys, vehicle counts, pavement coring, speed studies and computer data input and analysis.
  3. Assists in the daily organization, maintenance and upkeep of engineering records.
  4. Performs other related engineering and technical duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Must demonstrate strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge in computer word processing, file management, and Excel applications.
  • Ability to follow complex oral or written instructions, work independently and communicate effectively with peers, supervisors, property owners and general public.
  • Physical ability to work outside in inclement weather and conditions.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
  1. Majority of work is performed in an office environment where the physical demands require sitting for extended periods of time; frequent use of computers and standard office equipment; may work under stress of deadlines. Some activities may be performed outdoors and under adverse weather conditions.
  2. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone.
  3. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written/typed documents and text materials.
  4. Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate standard office equipment and a personal computer and to make adjustments to equipment.
  5. Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to lift up to 30 pounds, to sit and work at a computer for extended periods of time, to work in an office environment and conduct field work, as required.
Training, Experience, and Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Preferably enrolled and attending a college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or related field.
  3. Possession of valid Ohio driver's license.
  4. Must be honest, dependable and trustworthy.
Supplemental Information / Special Requirements

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION / SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

On average, this position works 40 hours per week, when class is not in session (Monday through Friday).
