DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The Environmental Health Specialist performs environmental health inspections, enforcement, and legal
documentation. This position advises, provides training, and technical assistance on recurring problems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate environmental health services programs related to codes and
ordinances, food sanitation, food/water borne illness, emergency response, environmental related injury,
institutional environmental health, recreational sanitation, substandard housing, vector control, wastewater
management, and water quality.Participate in the development and update of tribal specific health plan and various Environmental Health
Services Plans, Standard Operating Procedures, and policies.Take samples of water, sewage, milk, meat, and other foods for laboratory analysis; perform laboratory
analysis and organize report data; inspects eating, drinking, food processing, food distribution equipment, and
establishments.Identify environmental factors/issues that might affect the publics health; interpret the results and recommend
methods of control.Enforce, regulate, and provide recommendation and guidelines to local community and private industry based
on the codes, ordinances, and upon established sanitarian principles.Inspect food establishments, swimming pools, hotels, motels, trailer court, and sewage and refuse disposal
units, governing the sanitary condition of each establishment.Investigate complaints of citizens regarding unsanitary conditions and collect evidence on infraction; may
testify in court.Provide public health education, health promotion activities, and through enforcement and regulations to
improve the public health and prevent environmental related illness in the community.Works in non-engineering technical capacity in water supply, water pollution, or air pollution control.May have oversight and train less experienced Environmental Health Specialist and Environmental
Technicians.Perform other related duties as assigned.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

- Knowledge of Tribal Laws and Public Health rules and regulations pertaining to environmental health.
0 Knowledge of various field equipment; e.g., sound level meter, MSA pump, light meter, voltmeters, "woodenhead" electrical tester, etc.Ability to analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.Ability to prepare concise technical reports (monthly, semi & annual reports).Ability to effectively plan, organize, coordinate, and implement program activities and mentor others.Ability to work various and odd hours (after hours, weekends, etc.)Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.Ability to maintain accurate records.Ability to effect improvement in sanitary practices in the private sector and sanitary programs in the publicsector.

0 Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace.REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

- Thirty (30) semester credit hours from an accredited college or university in natural sciences or a closely
related ?eld and two (2) years experience in performing health inspections in the areas of: food services,
business establishment, and/or swimming pools; Or0 Five (5) years experience as a Sanitarian Assistant or Environmental Health Technician in a recognized
public health agency or private industry performing health inspections in the areas of: food services, business
establishment, and/or swimming pools; Or0 Five (5) years full-time military service in the Environmental Health field.ADDITIONAL RE! EUIREMENT:
- Must obtain a Registered Sanitarian license within the State of Arizona or a Registered Environmental Health
Specialist with the National Environmental Health Association within two (2) years of employment.
0 Required to obtain a Tribal Operators permit. Valid state drivers license with a current proof of driving
record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record
must be submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the
