Job Description:

Salary Range: $55,000 - $75,000 per year; depending on experience.


Environmental Health/Safety is looking to hire an environmental professional to support ASU's environmental compliance programs. This position plans, organizes and coordinates compliance and monitoring activities to ensure environmental compliance for the university community. This includes providing consultation and guidance, conducting audits and facility inspections, conducting training, data management and addressing issues and suggesting remediation steps or improvements. Serves as a technical advisor.


Essential Duties:

  • Conducts site visits to audit, provide consultation and inspections of university facilities to ensure compliance with federal, state, local regulations, codes, and university requirements.
  • Develops and implements environmental programs and activities to support university goals.
  • Interprets and ensures effectiveness of specific methodology and key performance indicators for the department including the effectiveness of environmental activities and education.
  • Communicates with customers on environmental compliance matters.
  • Reviews, interprets and evaluates compliance activities and policies to ensure environmental compliance and recommends and/or implements required changes.
  • Manages relationships with regulatory agencies to stay abreast of changes, manage compliance, and ensure compliance.
  • Investigates and remediates problems associated with environmental impacts.
  • Trains staff to take measurements and prepares required reports for tracking, decision-making and/or compliance requirements.
  • In collaboration with Sr. Safety Partner and other leaders, reviews construction plans for new and existing buildings to ensure compliance with environmental and life safety regulatory requirements, codes and standards to assure compliance prior to occupancy.
  • Provides guidance to stakeholders to ensure the safe and environmental handling of hazardous materials, including biologicals, chemicals, and radioactive materials.
  • Operates specialized equipment used for gas detection, mercury vapor analysis, and radiation detection.
  • Ensures accurate inventory and accuracy of storage management systems for environmental regulations and hazardous materials such as biologicals, chemicals, and radioactive and potentially radioactive substances.
  • May assist with industrial hygiene, life-safety, and fire-safety tasks.
  • Leads special studies and project teams as required by supervisor.
  • Designs, develops and facilitates environmental education, outreach and workshops for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Creates and maintains environmental data using various information systems or user-specific software.
  • Conducts assessments, audits, and investigations and recommends solutions and best practices by communicating verbally or in writing with the stakeholder.
  • Serves as liaison with subject matter experts in the development and facilitation of high impact training materials and participates in logistics planning, communication and marketing.
  • Reviews accuracy of reports for environmental and safety programs ensuring federal, state, and local regulatory requirements are satisfied.
  • Serves as a member of the department emergency response team and participates in emergency drills and actual emergencies.
  • Drives Arizona State University leased, owned or rented vehicles and carts to various ASU locations, within and outside of Arizona, to perform work.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in Environmental Program Management.
  • Experience with the following: wastewater management, spill prevention, control, and countermeasures (SPCC), refrigerant management, underground storage tanks, safe drinking water, Tier II reports, environmental due diligence, air permitting, air quality compliance, dust control, asbestos program compliance, and others.
  • Experience conducting audits, advising stakeholders, and developing and conducting training.
  • Evidence of preferred certifications and training: Underground storage tank operator training, Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act certification, HazWOPER certification, dust control training.


Working Environment:

  • Most activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of
  • sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Additional activities are performed in non-climate-controlled areas such as the outdoors, boiler rooms, and non-permit confined spaces that require standing for varying lengths of time and walking moderate distances in uneven terrain, equipment and pipes.
  • Ability to create organizational filing structures and file documents, reports, submittals, guidance's, and other department assets.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 25 pounds 15 percent.
  • Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to the resolution of conflicts.
  • Works in indoor and outdoor environments that may include extreme weather conditions; hot in summer and cold in winter.
  • Participates in respiratory protection program; assists with respiratory fit testing and training.
  • Participates in ASU medical surveillance programs, which may include vaccinations.
  • Potentially work with hazardous agent or physical hazards.
  • Occasional on call duty, which includes nights and weekends, is required.
  • Works in areas that require the use of personal protective equipment such as hard hats, steel toe shoes, gloves, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Driving Requirement:

This position may require driving. Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.
